well I don't know what what they carry but I'd suggest [ www.boutiquecourir.com ] and [ www.mec.ca ] I think Mountain Equipment Co-op would have better price but check it out and let me know.

knees are the greatest risk of sport injury so I'd suggest bike instead reducing impact absorption by the knees.

In theory that's good, but the problem is bikes work out a totally different set of muscles; I've been biking almost everywhere this summer, but if I walk more than three blocks I get shin-splints and have to slow down to practically a crawling pace.

The trick is learning to run properly, as well as getting good shoes.

Contrary to what big shoe companies would have you believe, big padded soles are BAD for you. You get just as much stress/shock to the knee when running, the thing is now your feet are padded, so your first line of defense against fucking up your body (pain) is gone.

Take your shoes off one day, and do a quick run/jog barefoot, and try and run how you would if you had shoes on; put all your weight down on your heel. That pain is what's supposed to let you know you're doing it wrong!

Big problem #1 when it comes to shoes and running properly is your toes; toes are like fingers. Run some tape around your hand so that your thumb is pressed up in the same direction as your fingers, then try leaning on a wall with one hand and balance yourself.. It's hard to do, because you need your thumb to really create a proper balance..

Your toes are exactly the same; shoes restrict your big toe from being in a natural position to absorb shock and keep balance. If you walk around barefoot in your apartment/house/whatever and pay attention to your feet, you'll see what I mean.. You're probably walking more on your toes/side of your feet, and not walking heel-to-toe like you would with shoes on.. THAT's how you should be walking/running/jogging.

For the longest of time I had really weird foot pains/cramps that would sneak up on me if I was walking or standing around a lot.. it felt like my big toe was being dislocated from my foot.. kinda like the toe and whole bone running through my foot was being pulled in the opposite direction.. I got myself a pair of Nike Air Rifts this summer, and despite them still being "padded" shoes, the sole is a lot softer than I've ever seen on running shoes, and it makes it easier to walk "properly", as well as having the ninja-style split toe, so that your toes aren't being pressed together unnaturally.

So, while Nike Air Rifts are a little on the expensive side (only found one UK website that has them that ships to canada, and they're pretty much all rare dead-stock) I'd recomend something like [ www.tenkaralin.com ]

It's got a thin sole, so you'll know when you're walking/running "wrong", the soles are flexible, and it's got the split-toe so you can run naturally and have better balance.

You could also go with the Vibram five-finger shoes, which would probably be even better for your knees, but they look a little too weird for the average person [ www.vibramfivefingers.com ]

yup, runing properly and good shoes are key. I never had any serious knee problems because of daily runs. Runing is a wonderfull sport.

I need to do some running, but first I need to do some more walking lol

It doesn't help also that I've got rheumatoid arthritis, so lots of walking or anything that involves a lot of movement usually ends up hurting after very little time doing it.. It's like trying to run in water, but all my joints feel like that.. like, slow and hard to move..

*edit* also, stupid as it sounds, there's a DVD out there called Chi Running, that's actually really good, and teaches you how to run properly without damaging your knees, and the method of running helps you run longer and further by teaching you how to let your body "take over" and automate the process.. It's on some torrent sites if you dig around (I think I got it off Demonoid, but that's still down)

I did some Tai Chi and if it's related to that, I'm quite interested.

cool I will check that out thanks!

ya I've heard that before. both my parents have been really into tennis since they were kids, and recently my mom had to get surgery on her knee because of that. takes it's toll. (though she still plays all the time)

ya! totally agree. I've always loved cross country. I used to jog on trails every day and never had a problem. jogging or hiking through the woods in the early morning is the bomb. can't wait to start doing that again.

It's been a while since I watched it, but I think it's more to do with the Chi as energy (quick wiki lookup: note that 'chi' in this instance is the Wade-Giles of Pinyin jí, not to be confused with the use of ch'i / qì in the sense of "life-force" or "energy". )

this is more about running without hurting yourself and while using as little energy as possible.

I'm certain if you google "Chi running DVD Torrent" you should get some hits.. I'm not sure I've still got the file anymore..

People have recomended that to me before, as well as yoga, but the problem that most people don't seem to realise is that my cartilage and pretty much everything around all my articulations is like, ground down and worn.. more movement, even if it's slow or relaxing, is like rubbing two cheese-graters together..

I used to do that when I was in Qc City (at the Hilton too, weird)! Swimming in a warm pool when it's cold outside the water is priceless.

Pools are a good substitute, but nothing beats swimming in a lake, a river or the ocean.

I'm sooo getting a pair of those when I'm back in town :)

*edit* actually the closest stores are in Ottawa and Kingston, so I guess I'll have to find an excuse to go there :)
I don't buy shoes without trying them before!

What is there to do in Ottawa or Kingston, when you live in Montreal (excepted "nothing")?
