I can remember going out to hip hop nights in Hamilton in 94/95. it was all Smif N Wessun, Bootcamp, Jeru, Group Home etc... the music was great! the crowd was pure thug. people were getting mugged in the stairwell entrance. in fact one week a SWAT team raided the place and busted a guy who had shot a taxi driver to death. despite that I loved the music so much I came back almost every week. I literally had nowhere else that I could hear those tracks live. but hell ya that tuff hip hop music brought out a ruff crowd. maybe some were born bad, some became like that because of societal ills, others trying their hardest to be bad. either way.. not for me. and I do think that if somebody has dedicated many many years acquiring an excellent record collection, then yes, it does mean their opinion on that music carries a lot of weight. and for the record - I'm no authority on hip hop and never claimed to be. I know enuff to speak on it though. but that aside, I agree with much of Erik's initial points. as I said he is a good friend and I certainly didn't mean to make him feel like I was turning on him or twisting his words |
