well they have been doing shit like that for years to the UN, the UN comes in with aid (food and medicine) and they just steal it at gunpoint from the aid workers so that they can later sell it illegally, nothing sells like food during a famine.

They make money by holding people (ship's crew ) ransom and some companies do paid them.
The Somali coast is a heavily traffic area with cargo ships, connecting West to East commerce, just like the Strait of Malacca which is also populated with pirates.

For someone who comes from a dirt poor country with no government, a couple of cool millions ransom money is very enticing.

hehe. you say that as if the world is not already overpopulated

so when do you think overpopulation is going to happen? how much will the toll be? and who will it affect? and what exactly is going to change?

mcleans article

If you want to find someone important in Somalia, the neighbourhood just east of Toronto’s Pearson International Airport is a good place to start. “Dixon,” as it is known, became the first stop for thousands of refugees from the war-torn country starting in the mid-1980s. And it is still the crossroads for the Somali diaspora in Canada—close to 38,000 people, according to the last census; more than half of them living in the GTA. “They are all here in Canada—the government, the pirates, the terrorists,” says Osman Ali, head of the Somali-Canadian Association of Etobicoke, and Puntland’s special envoy in Canada. “They go back and forth, especially around election time.” Ali, who has been a Canadian citizen for close to 30 years, remembers the Taars—Abdiweli, and his brothers Hiff and Abdul Raman. “I saw them go from driving taxis to becoming very rich men,” he says.

I wasnt joking. What do you think theyre doing while theyre driving the cab. Talking in solmali language on their cell phone all day long. Thats not cheap, always being on the cell phone. They must rack up bills in the thousands of $ per month. Too expensive for a cabdriver to afford. Unless the phone is for business purposes. The cab driving business is a front for other more dangerous and illicit activities. Like smuggling pirated goods or logistics

world isn't overpopulated yet cause developed worlds aren't starving yet.

True overpopulation will be when all of earth's major cities are like mexico and then worse.
Once this happens accountability will be unavoidable. Privacy will become criminal because with privacy, there can be no accountability; without accountability, anyone could do anything and with overpopulation these actions will directly affect too many other people for no one to take action. So either there will be pure chaos or an effort towards totalitarianism, hopefully the one that will result in systematic sustainable treatment (i.e. not chaos) will prevail.
I think overpopulation will happen in the next 1-2 thousand years unless some disease or world war prevents it.
The toll will be and already is every single human life, everyone dies, it's just a matter of time. The true 'toll' will be the criminalization of privacy. I mean, truth is our actions do affect others, so no one will stand for harmful or wasteful ways anymore.
It will affect everyone and everything.
What is going to change will depend on the severity of the overpopulation and the wisdom of our leaders.
I'm feeling hype right now..

hmm...

actually, we've reached a point very very near overpopulation...it's not obvious because the effects won't be felt for another hundred years or so. The rate at which natural resources are being consumed and depleted is alarming proof. You can't just think of who's here now in the present, think of how we can't possibly sustain the current lifestyle for all these humans for a number of years.

Obviously people aren't going to do what they would to any other species whose growth rate affects the environment and other species (ie. kill most of 'em).

There are masses of unused land, there's always space in or on the oceans, and we are currently 'OK'.
But, like I said, the effects will be felt when it's too late, after the fact. There is a point when we have to realize that Space isn't livable, so we have to make due with what we have here, and what we have here will eventually run out. All the resources will resuscitate/rejuvenate themselves, ut only during the thousands/millions of years following our demise.

If it continues as is, there will be a necessity for massive amounts of death, either, like you say Zed, because of disease or war, but also because of a simple lack of resources/food. The only current solution, to impede a future of massive and total global suffering, is to control population, not through death, but through less procreation.

In other words, people should stop having 10 babies during their lives, and stick to 1 or 2 (or 3 max.) children per couple. It's called being responsible.

Overpopulation is a reality. Humans have slaughtered many other animals for that reason, who had lesser numbers and lesser effects on the world. We're in denial. We're always in conflict between society and survival.

(i'm not entirely sure what overpopulation has to do with pirates, but Zed's post made me react to this subject)
I'm feeling you up right now..

well I am pretty confident the world is well on it's way to Hell in a handbasket

people have been saying that since ancient times, but now it's for real

I went and saw David Suzuki give a talk in Toronto 3 years ago. really impressive guy

basically in a nutshell, he said that the only hope of saving the earth from the brink is if everybody puts their heads together and stop all the destruction and pollution and wasteful consumption, etc *right. now.*

and that was 3 years ago

and I'm as much a part of the problem as anyone.

I might seem cynical, but I think it's far too late for altruism to triumph over selfishness

too many people only seem to care about their families and friends and whatever tribe they feel they belong to. everybody else can be damned.

it is an evolutionary adaptation to only care about those you feel related to, but this lack of empathy for other humans makes me sick

but this same lack of empathy is absolutely essential to be ruthless enough to steal all the remaining resources for themselves

which, I believe, is exactly why 9/11 happened. it *had* to happen, in order to justify the takeover of the Middle East and Central Asian oil reserves

so people will just keep wanting big families and SUVs and and all kinds of unnecessary material gain, while the world is crumbling around them .. distracted by these mind-numbing reality shows, Canadian Idol, UFC matches etc etc

Juvenal - a Roman poet - said in the 1st century AD -

"bread and circuses"

what he meant by this, is that so long as the Roman senators give out free bread and hold free gladiator matches, the people no longer care what their government is doing, and are blind to the Empire's imminent ruin
