Living In Montreal

Hi guys. This fall I'm going to move in Montreal for my studies and I need to ask a few questions to some people living there.

1. I'm going to McGill and my roommate are going to Concordia and the other one have to finish one session of cegep before going to university. Where's the best place to live in my case? We thought St-Henri would be cool since it won't cost horribly expensive and it's near the metro and near the universities....

2. Where's the best clubs/bars/afters for electronic music? I've read that the Saphir was cool. Personnally I love every genres of electronic music but I'm much more attracted by Hard Tek even if my roomates are more into Minimal, Prog House, Deep House, Dubstep and Tech trance. I've been to Circus, Red Lite and Piknik Électronik a few times but I'm getting pretty much saturated of commercial prog house :S

3. Is there any stuff I've gotta try there? I'm thinking about Tourists traps though....

4. Do you have any advices to help my adaptation in Montreal? I mean stuff that you guys know but no one else knows? I mean I live in Quebec city so it's pretty much different I guess...

Thank you for any answers :)

Saphir's hardcore underground should get you your hardtekravemusic fix on thursdays, also Passeport for dubstep, breaks and stuff, check the calendar... and we have raves every weekend here.

Hey Axel, there aren't many club night's that meet your "musical tastes" around montreal, unfortunatly. there are a few raves that showcase some hardtechno.. check for Dj's like TOLTECH + OCTAVIO LUZ on line-ups !! :)
I'm feeling white flaging right now..

Yo Axel!

I'm feeling en esti!!! right now..

I live in the McGill Getto... It's walking distance from McGill, and Concodia in the summer. It's walking distance from McGill in the winter but Concordia only on not so cold days. It's right near all the good bars. In theory if you live in this area you don't need to buy a bus pass which will save you 70$/month. It's also a couple of blocks from the metros and lots of them.

[ maps.google.com ]

This is the area I am talking about. You might not get as large as place as in verdump, but you won't be around a bunch of crack heads and will actually be able to get your schooling done. You will also be able to go out without having to take night buses home since it's walking distance from everything. I've lived in this area for 4 years and would never move anywhere else.

I pay 715$ for a 4.5 comes out to 400$ each with everything (internet, electricity, extras) a month. I'm a walk from mount royal, a walk from st laurent, a walk from st catherine and a walk to mcgill.

I'm feeling zzz right now..

Passeport holds electronic music nights every thursdays. The place is kinda small, but people there are really friendly, and lots of good music (usually dubstep/dnb and whatever the guests are playin').

If you're into dubstep, there's also a new monthly night at Blizzart (second sunday of every month). People who are putting this night on are also making other nights from time to time.
I'm feeling the bass right now..

Hey! Merci pour les conseils :) We're going to look for that spot you talked about Noah, it's really interesting :)
I'm going check the spots you guys talked about so we could find anything affordable.

By the way, do these appartments are generally soundproof or these are too old so they are not all?? We're 3 producers/DJs so I guess we'll be a lil' bit noisy sometimes (but we're civilised :) ).

And as for clubs/bars/whateverhaselectronicmusicinside, I'm going to check out the calendar more often here....seems like you guys have the equivalent of the few bars in Quebec city that plays non-commercial electronic music like Sonar, Le Cercle and Le Boudoir but made in many more copies. Passeport and Saphir are definitively in the venues I got to visit :).

@Clown : Btw, is Octavio Luz's previous nickname is Mistoleum? If so, I already talked to him 2-3 years ago and I didn't even know he was mixing Hard Techno when I was more into electro house and was learning how to mix (at this time, he was mixing minimal tek). That's interesting :D
I'm feeling pudcheveux! right now..
