I use vonage. It costs me 22.95$ a month with call waiting, call display, voicemail (which I can save on my comp from the website), 500 minutes in north america per month. It's pretty good, except when have my torrent client open at the same time.

i do but not the voip with them,

i like their payment option, cash , whomanymonths i decide, no contracts.

pure customer freedom. plus they dont cap bandwith that much, you can serv. almost all services.
im saying almost cause i havent tryed all 895983 existing somthing ports.

if your anything short fuse like me youll might get a little pissed at some guy at their downtown office when you go and pay , their kinda slow , get 30-45 min parking not 30..

have the exact cash amount too, dont put your trust into their "credit", they never have change
at the counter and they never give the "credits" on the next bill. on that their kinda shifty
because its off the counter.

basically if you take cable service with them your just going tru videotron service, but undergo
the whole vif=videotron rebate they have between them, same goes with dsl, its bell but with vif,

if ever you escalate more than the basic helpdesk youll end up talking to either core compagnies
help desk in the end , but with your rebate vif account

but i think cable can attain either 52k or 512k or 1mb, with the regular 1mb they made so many
changes in the last years i dont event know,

but if you can upload and download in azureus at 100k/s and still make some calls i would definitely
switch. but that depends. especially if your paying something like 70$/50$/30# months to get that speed

Recently got a primus VOIP box, it's ok but if you lose power and/or internet no more phone. Also the first device they sent us was faulty and wouldn't work properly. However it's super cheap, you can use whatever phone you want, and the quality is excellent.

Big plus - you move to anywhere, you can keep the old number and area code. So let's say I move to Germany one day, I can still have all my friends from Montreal call me locally with no extra charges either way.

I seriously dont understand people.

its voip. phone by internet

no internets = no phone.

i dont know, the first time i ever HEARD about voip i knew the phone would not work if there is no electricity or internet. i mean, thats as obvious as a car not working without gas.

and don't most of them have a backup battery that enables you to keep using it for a certain amount of time after the power goes out?

nop, only videotron.

because if you have lets say internet by dsl. and there is an electrical power outtage in your area, lets say your town, the CO (bell's shit internet machine in your area) which provides you internet doesnt have a bettery itsself.

no power in your area = Bell's CO down = no internet signal in the network = no phone.

even if YOU have a ups, bell wont be putting batteries in their networrk soon, caus they dont need them, only voip distributors (read : bell concurrency) need them, why should bell help them?

not always true. Some VOIP services use your telphone line, which then transfer to the internet later on with a private network...so you don;t actually have to have to subscribe to internet to have VOIP. For instance, Shaw offers digital home phone out west, and Covad offers Line Powered Voice in major metropolitan centers throughout the USA through Earthlink

well, not in quebec.
for your information, the purpose of this thread was to talk about which company offers voip services IN QUEBEC.

you know, in japan, they have a lot of thing, but is it any relevant to what we are talking, no.

Wow...hostility dan la maison. Perhaps I just misunderstood your post...I thought you posted that VOIP requires you to have an internet connection, and thats not true. Cable companies can give you a type of VOIP that does not require you to have an internet connection, since they can run it through their cable network.

VideoTron;s offering is probably something similar...its not internet-voip like vonage. It runs on a private, prefered and secured network...you dont need to have the internet to get the service. Hence the reason its probably more expensive (although perhaps not justifiably so)

VOIP = Voice Over INternet Protocol,
Even theough the CABLE companies are running it through their network, at a certain point it needs to connect to the DSLAM or wtv devices the cable companies use. Your cable signal is still at some point deviating into the cloud, therefore your phone service is still offered over the internet. Just because you don't have an actual internet connection and don't surf the internet per se, your digital phone service is still going through the internet...hence the term VOIP

tsk. You can get a good 6 volts from your phone jack. Know how to harness this power and you'll be able to have a phone service when the power is out, as most phone lines still work when the power is out :)
