You probably use her to say "look even people of faith agree there are problems so there must be" but it's also "look these people of faith actually have their own ideas and are perfectly capable of dealign with their own problems and recognising they exist". What use is it to tell people like us that they have problems? No one would take advice on their religion from someone who doesn't follow it. We also have a good deal of problems in our own christian ideology based society such as the outstandign ability to perceive and label everything very simply as black or white and good or bad and believing we are more righteous(as if that should even be a word) than everyone else. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to attack that ideology which affects most non-religous canadians unwillingly than to tackle religion that 90% of us don't believe in? That would have us believe that by not being relious we are innocent of all that.

Coolness: 145420	i just don't think it's up to us to tell anyone that they are brainwashed. it's not that i don't believe 'brainwashing' is impossible (a la. manchurian candidate),i just don't believe that that's what's going on here. It's like saying that someone is crazy, you can just discount what they are saying because of it, maybe atheist really do see religious beliefs and spiritualism as a kind of madness, i'm not atheist (as everyone on this board knows) so i can't really say. Maybe it's because atheism is so scientificaly oriented, a strictly scientificaly oriented world view has trouble tolerating any other epistemoligical source of knowledge. What i do know is that the individual is the most important thing and to label someone as brainwashed or crazy because they ascribe to a certain view of the world be it theological or ideological seems to me to deny the individual the right to derive meaning and fulfilment from life, wherever they might find it. I think in some ways atheism is a mis application of science to areas where it's not meant to go, science can't tell us what's right or beautiful or just. It's very good at describing the way the universe is (especially in physical contexts) and how it works, but it's very bad at telling us why things are the way they are, what our place is in the universe and how we should live our lives. I think those things are better left to religion and philosophy...
