I find discussing religion can be very interesting when people are not extremists and are open-minded.
I like to know why one believes in x, what it brings to his life, etc...
Having a philosophy of life, or religion, isn't bad in my opinion. It's when someone uses it to empower other people that it becomes a problem.

But like it or not, religions have been with us for a long time.
I don't think they'll go away just like that.

I don't like religions, but that does not mean i think that all religious people are bad, and good religious people understand that not believing in god (a god or their god) does not make a person less good.

I guess one of the things I hate the most about religion is that people delegate the job of thinking for them ,sometime to a religious leader sometime someone dead for over a thousand years....,

someone who is good even if they are religious will realize when something is inherently wrong while fanatics will stop using reason and their own judgment...so when I hear that faith is a great virtue he get seriously pissed off

and about humor and humour, the fun thing is that it might be the default way to spell it in most spellcheck but it is spelled humor pretty much only by our friendly neighbors south of the border.

Some religions tell to people that the truth is something when that thing is not necessarily true. I remember having a quarrel with a classmate in elementary school. She was trying to convince me that humans come from Adam & Ève and I was trying to convince her that humans come from monkeys. Wars begun from such misbeliefs. And what about the muslims? They've been fighting for hundreds of years just because (correct me if I'm wrong) a clan claims that the immediate successor of Mahomet is Ali and another claims that it's the calife. Think about the crusades. Think about the christian fanatism in south US. Religion is really a brainwashing. It should be illegal to teach dogmas as truths to children.

the thing is...these people think that it is the truth...there might not be any logical reason for that, but they are still convinced of that, so for them it is teaching not brainwashing.

Children need to be taught to question everything and develop a healthy skepticism.

Yeah but why do these people think that it is the truth? Because that's what they've been thought while they were kids...

And you're right saying that children need to be taught to question everything and develop a healthy skepticism. There should be theology courses instead of religion courses.

i really like this thread :)..

i think religion can be good for a person in the sens that it's bring the absolut true to all human questions and mistery of life.. that can be good for anxiety..

i come from parents who are not believers and were reading nietzsche and marx.. for sure i got often scientific explanations on a lot of subjects and i'm very grateful for that.. but for everything concerning spiritual questions there's was often no answer or a denial of the question/subject.

i found my friends and the people around me who have some form of spirituality or are in a religion often more confident about life and death.

moi, i'm still not sure of anything concerning question that answer majority of religions ..and i prolly gonna remain that way until i die.

i still prefer philosophy because it's theory and i don't feel good into dogma shit. the bible can be a great book but sometimes when i meet very religious american who read it each day it's kind of scary... it would give me the same feeling if i would meet someone who's reading harry potter and made a big deal out of it.. and i hate church system. the catholique one the worse.

the worse and most dangerous that human can do is mixing religious into society/politic questions. how can you speak about logical subjects when your arguments are from mythes ? very bad idea. first example is the usa where the gov. is breaking all the time the american constitution(!!!!) and the bill of rights!!! it's so disgusting.

anyway..
I'm feeling hitched right now..

Ah, since we are on the topic of religion and Truth, let us put in perspective just exactly what TRUTH is: Truth is something which, when thought about, can logically be structured in such a way as making sense in every aspect. Interestingly, truth is something which is only conceptual. Truth is based upon concepts. It is the arrangement of concepts between themselves which leads us to the conclusion of "true" or "false" or "undetermined, need more data, or another joint or whatever".

Religious truth or, more aptly named "dogma" has this particular aspect to it that it boils down to "because (insert prophet name) said so, that's why". Whereas philosophical or scientific truth is achieved through deduction and logic. They are both made of the same stuff though: fiction.

Let us then put into perspective what concepts are: they are a mental construct designed to REPRESENT an observed ASPECT of REALITY. They are a placeholder for reality. The universe is out there, concepts are just in our minds. Concepts and Reality are two very very different things, not in the same league at all. And yet, through the absurdly inflated pride of intellect, humans insist on treating concepts as they would reality. On an equal footing. As such, a humongous mistake of distortion of facts is constantly being made and human consciousness is thus forever veiled by illusion. Those with the greatest intellects are those who are the greatest victims of this. Happy the simple-minded.

So anyway, to sum it up, truth is a trick of the mind. No more, no less. It is a very important trick which lets one believe that they actually understand SOMETHING, which is extremely important in giving the ego a modicum of security in what would otherwise be an extremely threatening universe which they cannot comprehend. Yet, "truth" is so deeply flawed that it must be remembered that it cannot be allowed to have any bearing on our behavior or consciousness, lest we become as the religious fanatics.
I'm feeling pretty damn good right now..

^ LUcY iN tHe SKy WitH dIAMOND!

so what you're saying is that there's is no truth. so, i can like (example) go to your mother house and stab her couple of times while you're seating in the very same kitchen eating her good old shepherd's pie. and when you gonna say to the emergency service that i did it.. i will say.. no it's a trick of his mind, he understand anything! he doesn't understand the universe, he don't know the truth.

Yet, "truth" is so deeply flawed that it must be remembered that it cannot be allowed to have any bearing on our behavior or consciousness, lest we become as the religious fanatics.

It is only the fragility of so-called "mind" that requires us to adhere to the standard of "truth".

What I am stating is that "truth" and "reality" are two completely different things and that we put waaay too much importance on "truth" due to the fragility of our egos, who must hang on to SOMETHING in order to feel a degree of safety.

But yeah, go stab whoever you want, I'm not stopping you...
