Why Do Bad Dj'S Fill Rooms?

Anto laisse faire.

I used to be good, seemed fine at home when I started the project, but I have not thought through a few things but people pushed me to my potential because I used to project something great. And no Screwhead he did not book me out of reputation, he had heard me many times before and likes it, as everybody else back then that's it that's all. But the ME thing is not important anymore.

I'm trying to explain to you that not everybody is great at first, they have to get the chance to try different things and if you have never or barely ever played in a party, there is no learning experience like it. So yes, you will get better, but people in the scene have the heart to give new DJ's a chance to improve, and what pissed me off for Melo as an example is that, quit pretending you want to help if you are to bitch her in public, get her msn, write her an mp and give her your comments, what the hell man.

That's all, as I said I don't usually make so much noise in a topic anymore, but it pissed me off because it was way too much. G'nite, relax, do as I say not as I do.

copy paste from the Yzabella comments thread from 2 years ago:

ALIEN ZED said: "I wanted to test my theory that if the music is good enough, mixing doesn't really matter. I have since concluded that the music is all important, so I hope you liked my choices :)"

Do I honestly need to say more?

To get on topic, I kinda agree with alienzed. I don't want to come off as an elitist, it's just that I've seen some parties where bad dj's have filled the rooms.

Right, let me explain... what seems to happen is bad dj's have habbits of like... cutting in and out of tracks very quickly and not doing too much eq'ing. They also a lot of times touch the decks/mixer too much. Like they'll kill the lows every 32 beats, or they use the Jet effect A LOT on the CDJ100s. And what seems to happen is that the "non-educated" ravers, see this as a good thing, cuz they can tell what the dj is doing, and it sort of puts on more of a show.

A good dj is about beng able to blend tracks without the audience knowing, which if you think about it, is very anti-pop culture; where everything is in your face and loud. I don't really think, someone that is new to the rave scene can tell the difference betwen a good dj and a bad dj.
I'm feeling wtf charles? right now..

Tamala brought to the table the one point that as as DJ has always really pissed me off,.

People that come to a party and mix like fuckin shit, and then say "Well it's cuz I am not used to the mixer"

Fuck that you are a dj...Any and every gig I have ever played has had a different mixer...
it takes no more than 3 tracks to get used to a new mixer, you check it, you look at the knobs, you figure it out!
Its a fucker mixer fer christ sales, it is not rocket science!

You got the skillz, you got the tracks, you got the dancefloor...Point finale.

I often play with ALOT of dj's that technically speaking are way better than me......
yet Selectah Vaig always manages to rock the dancefloor...why....
Cuz I got the tunes! That's it dats all.
You got an ear, you know you missed yer drop, so fuckin recover and hit the next one
I'm feeling ez'ly baked right now..

i absolutely agree, and it is no excuse, as I said in my first post. But when you're a newbie, or an old fart like me coming back for fun and peer pressure, then you realize something is going wrong and you don't have yet or anymore the self confidence, you get nervous, things fuck up, it all goes from worse to worse. I call it karma, which plays in any domain in life: work, school, etc... Thing is at home, you can just go "awww it sucks, I'll try again tomorrow when I am in a better mood", but not when you still got like 50 minutes to go. Some people get discouraged, get lazy throughout their set and don't even try anymore... when you realize it's like that, please don't be a dj anywhere else than at home, but it takes at least one time to know it.

Alienzed himself told me I had a hard time at first but seem to get better when I got used to the gear, but I honestly got discouraged from the beginning because I never used to debeat, my mixes were just not that great, but I got insulted by myself. Don't get me wring, it's no freakin excuse, but shit happens, people have it, people don't, and others just lost it. I have usually now more fun dancing at parties, than stressing on them because I have to play ;)

All in all, you've all made good points and parts of what everyone said is true...

we learn from our experiences, good and bad, but we learn from each other and each other's experiences too. Sucks that the only time we get passionate about something enough to talk about it is when we get mad.

something Kalan told me makes a lot of sense now. Feeling strongly about anything is really important, if we don't argue with each other and sometimes with ourselves, we lose the meaning of it all,... or something :P

as many parties seem to fail and as many promoters seem to lose money, there are still parties every weekend, and that alone is a victory for the scene. my advice to anyone with a passion is never give up.

I don't even know why this thread was started in the first place and i REALLY don't understand how this thread turned into people complaining about people saying "you suck" !! There are alot of Dj's the deserve to know that they fucken suck behind the decks and we should be thankful that other's have the balls to throw it up in our faces. everyone has a bad night once in a while and it makes me feel good to know that even on my bad nights, people were still paying attention and notice that we can be better ; and let us know about it too..

The few people who've critic'd my sets before hardly ever come out to party anymore and all i get now is "great set man", whether i was A1 or D- !!!

I don't know about ANY ONE in this thread and how there skills are, so please, i am just discussing things, not shooting people.

On a side note and to be more on-topic, here is the answer to your original question..

Good Dj's bring people, bad Dj's don't, technicalities aside. We will just have to accept that and insted focus on how to bring people. With all this new technology (Serato, Final Skratch, LIVE), beatmatching will be secondary sooner than we expect. I read in an interview with Richi Hawtin that the industry will move away from "who's the better skilled DJ" and more towards "what they are playing / who they are / Reputation" !!

I personally find it sucks, but its takes all to make a scene and it takes both at your party to have enough cash to pay everyone. I'd rather book a non-talented DJ who plays good tracks then one who thinks he's good using Serato !!! that's just me once again !! :)
