K. look, [ en.wikipedia.org ]
I don't know what your values or beliefs are, but science has been embarrassing all other forms of belief for centuries now and will continue to do so. Science makes this message board possible...
Religion is control, NOTHING ELSE. Spiritual belief is dangerous human behavior in some cases, think about female circumcision. I am not saying there is no God, but it doesn't change anything to believe in one. If you are gullible and short sighted enough to think that there's some all powerful being out there, then maybe you NEED that belief to be a moral person. Most humans need to think that someone is always watching them, otherwise they'll commit crimes and be bad people... I for one understand the importance of being morally responsible without believing that I'll be sent to hell for not being good. KIDS need noble lies, any respectable adult (so few in this world) should NOT need THREATS to be good people.
And no, magic and voodoo are not real, YES anyone who believes in them is a moron. I am not using this term as an insult, although most morons would take it that way. Instead I use it to mean IT'S DEFINITION!
Moron: A person having the mental age of 8 to 12 years who is capable of doing routine work under supervision.

THAT is my 'current' opinion. Show me magic, i will try to explain it using conventional science, therefore disproving it and replacing the notion with something that humans can mentally grasp. Is that so wrong?
Besides, I am no moron, I am human and I have limits and I have opinions but I for one will NOT close my mind at any point and simply reject something without verification. There are truths... there are logical explanations for EVERYTHING, just because we don't have all the explanations, doesn't mean they don't exist. And yes, I laugh at people who think their souls are being stolen by a camera, because you can take TWO pictures of the same person, and as far as I know, no one believes we have more than one soul. It's sad to see the depths of human ignorance in this world... truly saddening.
But I like you Anne, you seem to be a nice person, and that above all I cherish most in this world, I don't think you are a moron, or rather, I hope you are not one.

anyone who tries to counter faith with science or fact completely misunderstands the concept of faith. Faith is belief in the absence of proof. Faith does not require, nor even conform to, the scientific method. How then, can you construct an empirical argument against the which does not conform to an evidence based reality?

I TOTALLY disagree, anyone who tries to counter faith with science or fact completely UNderstands the concept of faith and that's why they are trying to show their friend that they are being moronic. If faith had actual arguments, maybe you wouldn't try and argue with them, but there are no arguments except for noble lies, which are good to live by, but completely stupid to actually believe in.

I agree with the second part though, constructing an empirical argument against that which does not conform to an evidence based reality is like convincing a twelve year old girl that unicorns don't exist, because in essence, she doesn't care IF they exist, she WANTS them to exist and that's ALL that matters. But some day that girl is going to have to accept that although the idea might be nice to live by it's complete bullshit!!

In a certain sense tho, I have to see the futility of disproving faith with science. I dont think science has claimed to disprove any religions or mystic doctrines. What it Has done is exposed dogmatism- the earth is flat, the center of the universe, yada yada. But science is not diametrically opposed to miracle, we can look at a star, and science can explain all these things about it; its a burning ball of gas, it actually imploded centuries ago, and other things, but that is Still Magic. The existence of H2O Is magic, its parts and its functions nothing less than a miracle. And science can fairly be viewed merely as a construing of Gods movements, a method of explaining them. A scientific wo)man can just be someone taking a rational approach to the mindbending properties of the universe, somehing thats totally commendable in my book. Im not particularly religious, but i think this polarization of science with 'faith' can have little to it ..

if you believe it is real, then it is.
in my world faeries do exist, i see them when i walk in the forest - a shadow, a light... they quickly hide... and the trees, they speak to me, using telepathy. they hold a lot of wisdom of the ancients, the big old trees that seem to have been here since forever, the ones that have never been cut down. but that is not magic, it is fantasy. deep down i know it, still living those adventures make life so much more fun, because i don't have to use a nintendo or a computer to live these things, i do it in real life. imagination - it is way beyond the science or rationnality, yet it does not make anyone a moron.

there is another kind of magic though, and it is real. you know, the healing magic. the people who heal themselves from sickness, just by believing they can, by using love, light, good thoughts, etc. music magic. love magic. the guy who did psy-trance, called 'the muses rapt', the cd is called 'spiritual healing'. this guy, he had cancer and he cured himself while doing music. the same guy with the same sickness, but that would not have music to heal... he would probably have died you know... the magic of intentions and will. the inner magic. the force of life. it cannot all be explained by science, but it still happens.
I'm feeling meltdown right now..

calling people's belief's "stupid" is a really close minded way to live your life. but if you chose to live it that way, so be it. Just don't let it affect how you deal with other people, because the reality is, not everyone thinks the same way you do, and you should respect that.
