I think history is much more important to know than current affairs. It's impossible to formulate a well-rounded opinion on any current issue if you are not aware of what happened in the past... I recently heard an example of some children in Arab states not being taught about the holocaust, so they think the Jews just "took over" Israel and don't know the real history of why the country exists now. The only thing that seperates one land from another is a name and an administration and that did not exist before so no, Israel did not always exist. The land did. It's a lot more than a simple name change, a state is a division of land, that division of land did not exist before, if that was the case maybe you would have a point.
