Hello all,
I am in the search for another place to work, after leaving the absolute bullshit that is sports gambling on the mohawk reserve. Anyone have any suggestions for a place to work that pays decently, I don't mind telephone work (theres a reason why they call us anglo-PHONES).

Already suggested: Nordia (have an interview monday)

Thanks everybody,
raev on.
I'm feeling mac-a-phied right now..

it makes sense of course... but from a foreigner's point of view, it's a bit difficult, I've made an effort to speak french here, and my french has dramatically improved, but the quebecois french is pretty inaccessible, and some of the attitudes here towards people who speak the wrong kind of french with the wrong accent, or who speak broken french are pretty disgraceful...

In france, if you make an effort to speak french, people there make every effort to communicate with you... here, you just get shut down in a lot of cases (but not all)... it's very counter-productive, and it actually prevents people from speaking and improving their french... If more french speakers here were prepared to meet people who are learning halfway, then people who are learning the language wouldn't be so afraid to speak the language...

in any city worldwide, there's a proportion of the population who don't speak the language fluently, but they're not met with such fierce resistance by the locals who understand that it's not their first language, but they make the effort anyway...

Montreal is a beautiful city, you should welcome people who don't necessarily speak the language fluently, but who want to learn... every other city in the world does...

That's one of the biggest drawbacks of the city. Too many people are xenophobic about shit like that. If you don't speak "their" french, you're inferior to them and not worth the effort to communicate with, because you're an outsider and just out to steal their jobs and oppress them.

i agree... it's very counter productive

I understand why someone might get angry with someone who makes no effort at all to speak french, but fuck, if someone makes the effort, help them out... compared to the french that I learned, quebec french sounds like a completely different language... it's not easy to understand at all...

Most people will call it a dialect in the same way as cockney is to english, but it's really such a butchering of the language that it drives me nuts. I've lived here all my life, and was taught french by my parents/grandparents as my first language, and I have a ton of trouble understanding quebec french. It doesn't really have any set of rules other than "if you can't figgure out the proper word or expression you're looking for, make it up and take words from english to fill the gaps"

Unfortunately and sadly, NELLBOY
, you are totally right. The Quebecois mentality is so much focused on their own micro selfishness french dialect that they cant seem to understand that they are not speaking it properly, it's indeed disgraceful. It is one of the main reason why Quebec Corporations are laking effectivity and productivity. 75% of Quebecois cant accept the fact that the world is evolving and changing. They are doing everything in their power to keep it noncommittal.

Reality is heading in a different direction. To be able to keep pace with the international competition the Quebec Corporate Infrastructure needs every bits of competent human resources available due to the low birth rate and the increasing aging of the population. The growth of the Internet makes the world smaller everyday and machine language is totally English oriented. By maintaining a French Fascist Mentality the memory of the Quebec Culture as we know it today will vanish in a sea of diversity.

The French Quebecois, author Jacques Godbout wrote in the Actuality Magazine of September 2006 that by 2076 the french language will have completely disappeared. Lets get things right here, the first thing that the French Quebecois will try to do when this will happen will be to blame it on others like they've always done just to avoid the real issue, which is their lack of confidence in themselves and their complex of inferiority toward the English Culture Establishment. The Quebecois of tomorrow will be fully integrated in the Canadian Confederation and proud to be part of it. Hopefully in a near future the Quebec Culture within Canada will be more than a memory. Je me souviens.

Fuck that, I was 100% square head when I got here, and I managed to become fluent over the ourse of 1 year in MTL. It's not always easy, but I don't find people shut you down, quite the opposite actually, if you try to speak in french and they hear your accent, they try to accomodate youby speaking english BECAUSE youi made the effort.
In order to learn french in this city you really have to make the effort yourself annd impose yourself on people.
I'm feeling like a beer right now..

how about people using the word Nigger on this forum?

it's random that i bring that i bring it up in this thread in particular
but it's been bothering for quite some time
especially lately where it's been used quite frequently

i keep my mouth shut about it cause i call some of you my friends
and i don't need to point any fingers cause you know very well who you are

not going to explain why it shoudn't be used cause i especially dont want to hear any justification in using it no matter what context

to be on topic

i worked in Hochelaga Mainsoneuve for a year as a store manager
my french isn't perfect and despite the hostility and social problems in that generally exists in that neighborhood;
nobody ever made a comments about it
maybe a few racist comments about my ethnicity but that's to be expected when you represent a store and there's unhappy customers

some diplomacy goes a long way and usually if you don't reply why any hostility
people realise their mistake and even if they don't appologize they give some respect afterwards

I think Montreal isn't such a bad place for xenophobia compared to possibly other major cities
but even active anti-racist groups outnumber the racist one...
don't forget it's the suttle racism that seem harmless and linger around that are the worst

i think 101 is important in Quebec if applied with some diplomacy
especially when quebecers, more than ever, embrasse american culture
I'm feeling siem riep right now..
