we've already got a big enough stray cat population why would you make it any bigger?

these kitties and animals need homes, not to be thrown aside like garbage and left to die

awww poor thing:( I hate stories like that..how can ppl be so cruel.
Cats just dont magically get weird behaviour probs like that. (unless they are tortoise shells hehe)

The cat u want to get sounds like a typical tabby. They are the best. I always had tabbys. Very friendly, and loyal. I believe there are a lot of those right now at the spca. Check it out:

Damn that is just too sad...I know it is not the reaction I should have had but I stopped doing volonteer work at the SPCA myself a couple of years ago because seeing the Cats and Dogs there was just too painful. So I am glad that some people here have the strenght of will to work for our four legged friends (and the feathered ones too)
I'm feeling burning in hell right now..

Betty Haze - I am a Benevole:) But I also study animal care/behaviour:) I have been working in the field for 4 years at different kennels/hospitals. Now I am working in a dumb office to get by school because the pay is good. Once I am saved enough money I plan to move to B.C. and get a nice job there with animals.

Anarkoid - yes it is really hard seeing animals u love get euthanized...its tough. Fuck I watched 8 Below and cried the whooole time..Im a big baby. LOL

They won't let you keep it for free. I did this and I had to pay to keep the cat (1/2 price because I worked there, otherwise it would have been full). Nobody would adopt her because she was too shy.

I also agree that Tabbys are the best breed in the world. I would never get a different breed. Unless I had no choice. It's not so much that they're nice and friendly(a lot are shy and independant) but they are just really smart.

Really? A Bulldog was fostered for free the other day... BUT he had a skin problem so the foster family just took him and paid for the medication+checkups etc. I am surprised they made u pay half price. Was the cat perfectly healthy? If so thats probably why they asked u to pay half price ie u were working there AND it was a healthy cat up for adoption already. Fostering is usually only for the ones that are sick/not adoptable yet and need a temp home to get better so they dont pass the sickness around the shelter. IF the person decided to become a permanent foster parent for the sick animal they get it for free. On top of that this is a non profit organization - the gov doesnt do shit to help so yes all our contributions help in any way. I could be wrong about all this? But this is what my boss made me understand...

In my experience, Tabbys CAN be shy+are VERY independant but most were extremely outgoing and VERY smart. It all depends I guess. But the tabby rocks.

Moondancer thats nice u took the cat. Good for you:)

No I took the cat because it was very sick and about to be euthanised(they got a full sick room full of cats adopted in a few hours and she was the only one left to be euthanised, I couldnt leave her alone), if I didn't work there I would have payed full price, it had nothing to do with the fact that the cat was sick. The thing is that I had the cat for months and no one ever asked about it. The only reason I paid was because I wanted it nutured. That's how badly organised they are, they just won't notice the cat is gone in the first place so technically you can get it for free if you don't tell them you wanna adopt it cause they'll probably never ask. I didn't wanna keep the cat becuase my older cat(who just passed away :() is really jealous but I couldn't find anyone to adopt and I know for a fact if I brought her back she'd have no chance, she wasn't tame enough. Now she's super friendly and sweet but she didn't have a good home before. I used to work in the sick room too. What happened is they closed the room after about a week off euthanising every cat in it the day they came in. They didn't tell me so I come in and the receptionist was like "oh, the sick rooms closed down". Nobody called me or emailed me to tell me. They told me that someone would call me when and if it opens back up. So when the room was re-opened nobody ever told me about, no call, no email. So every sunday when I was supposed to be there there must have been no one. I couldn't have known. I hope that they are more organised now than they were then, becuase it was terrible before. Anyway, once I talked to another volunteer I found out about it being open again but by that time I had had enough time away to realise how much all the disgustingness affected me and couldn't find the strength to go back. All contributions help indefinitely but it's really sad to see the owner drive up in his BMW after his long vacation in Thailand. I hope they chanegd the fuckign owner, he was constantly making cuts to the animals for himself, he was a huge target of animal rights activists. What an asshole but it only means more money is needed for the animals. I dunno if you ever walked into the euthanasia room but it's the most disgusting place I ever saw in my life. You see all these fat cats and you know they're only there becuase they're fat and no one wants them. Sometimes I had no choice to go in there because certain cats would be sent there and then approved for the sick room so I'd have to go get them but it made me feel completely insane. They also euthanise kittens that are too small to take care of(they need to be fed too often). I have nightmares. Anything that's wrong with a cat besides if it's sick(sometimes) means death. If anyone ever brings a cat there(please do not) and they have problems don't ever let them know about the problems. There is no glorifying the SPCA. They work for a greater good but the work is gruesome and disgustiong, and it is not everyone who is in it for the animals. That's the sad sad truth.
Update » moondancer wrote on Fri Oct 6, 2006 @ 1:42pm
Having to walk in each time wonderign where the cats from last time went is too much for me now. Every time I think of the SPCA I wanna cry. I never asked where they go because you can't, cause there are too many and if you do you'll only find yourself in tears just to go through the same thing the next day, so you just suck it up and pretend nothigns happening and because of that I could never come to the realisation that it made me feel liek absolute shit every day.

any truth to that?

well.. I don't knwo anyting about that personally but like I said a cat with behavioural problems will be euthanised right away without exception as far as I know and a sick cat may or may not be. The SPCA makes that choice because it's a waste of money to assume that somsone might one day be willing to take them in(especially based on the fact that almost everyone adopts the healthiest happiest and youngest cat they can find) and because if they give someone a cat with behavioural or health problems without telling them it will ruin their reputation and no one will want to adopt. So it is really not in their best interest to do that. If that happens I would think it's either because someone who works there with a too-good heart decided to be dishonest and give the cat a chance of survival by keeping it secret or because the veterinarian did not do a complete and total check-up(probably impossible) or becuase the problem was developed after that. As an organisation they would never do that on purpose.

I think the best thing you could do in that situation is be greatful to be able to help a cat that may not have otherwise had a chance. Being scammed sucks but you have to remember that it's about the cat not the person who scammed you.

I still say they should let the cats go out in the wild. I think you have been brainwashed to think the desieses will spread... There are thousands of cats out there in the world... It's better to let them live then to kill them because no one wants to adopt them. People are stupid if the can't see that. Cats didn't always live with us as pets, they used to be free like other animals and I don't see other animals having problems.

yeah other than the fact that most other animals are practically extinct and don't have any natural habitat to live in anymore because humans are a cancer that destroy everything natural around them for more shopping malls and parking spaces.

WOW moondance that sucks. I worked at the spca about 6 years ago and left as well because the organization was shit. I was really not able to handle it. In the meantime after that I worked at kennels/hospitals and it was such a nice relief. I went back to the spca because I feel the organization is a lot better now. My boss is amazing. She is really fighting hard for these animals. She started about 3 years ago. Its wonderful. I am really ashamed actually from what u have told me - never been in the euthanizing room at the spca but have had been a witness of euthanized animals and it sucks very much. I can only imagine how it is at the spca. There is no intimacy there. I never take my cats to the vet there. I like to have a reltionship with my vet knowing my cats are in good hands.

That being said - I am a supporter of any animal foundation (not extremist) that tries to get our domestic animals off the streets/away from disease in nice homes. Whatever the deep sick secrets are of the spca - fuck it. Every person who leaves because of personal offense/emotions and doesnt try to help is not making the situation any better .Yes it sucks to see horrible sites like that - moondance sorry about the nightmares and stuff..me too I am kinda in a sad mood right now still (worked there today.) but we gotta be strong.

I have had a few dogs adopted and it feels good.

Noah: You are right in a way but like I said before preventing cats from getting spayed/nutoured will just make everything worse. yeah it sounds "evil" when we "cut off their balls" or whatever but it really is a good thing because if we didnt the spca would be a million times worse.

My point exactly.

Murdock - I have adopted a few animals from the spca and so far so good except my cats when I adopted them they had the flu so I got them medication and they are in perfect health now. I dont know what negative feedback u are hearing but any time u can get an animal away from there is great. And they will be greatful to you. Also I never felt scammed by them. My pets and my families pets are all in pretty good shape.

But to those who give your animals to the spca...you all suck. We have 35 dogs now. All big dogs. NICE dogs. And they are thrown away like that. Come on.

Oh yah one more thing : moondance you are right not everyone is in it for the animals..I noticed that. Its mostly the people who work there not the volunteers. Its shameful!! The workers I find, have their little click and dont seem to eally give a shit.
My manager at my work also used to volunteer there maaany years ago - told me the same thing as [ u..org ] was crap. Ugh. It seems to be better now..lets hope I dont get any nasty surprises.

here is an email from my boss at the spca regarding some info on permanent+temporary foster families:

Ok, now, about permanent fosters: permanent foster is an adoption
without
ANY fees!
Animals are chosen for permanent foster because they do not meet the
different adoption criterea
of the general public because, for example, they are too old, have
serious
behavioural issues or have
an illness.
If a family is willing to take in such an animal because they want to
save
a life, we do not charge them anything
for the adoption. The animals still get their 1st shot and are
dewormed
when they arrive at the SPCA but sterilization,
microchipping and medication are not provided. If an animal is
already
fixed then permanent fostering is a great option! Personnally, if I
could
take a permanent foster and it wasn´t fixed, I would choose to pay for
it
(i.e. adopt it-it is possible
to do that, that´s what the guy who adopted Noah did!) simply
because it
would be cheaper.

A few more notes about permanent fosters:
- Permanent fosters are kept in the adoption kennel. There are 2 at
the
moment: Mooky and the 8 year-old
Hound. You can recognize permanent fosters by the lavender sign that
is on
their cage. It reads something like:
"special case. see foster program for more info).
- Some animals that are up for adoption can become available for
permanent
foster at one point.
The most common case is when an animal has been at the shelter for a
long
time. The goal is to find a home
for them and to save a life, not to "make money" so we wave the
adoption
fee.
- If you are interested in a dog but are willing to let it go if
someone
wants it and want to take it if no one else
does, you can put a note on its file "do not destroy, willing to take
as
permanent foster, your name and 2 phone
numbers". If the animal becomes available for permanent foster, you
willl
be called but you will have to come and
get it quickly-usually within 24 hours.
- Permanent foster is not to be confused with temporary foster.
Temporary
fostering involves keeping an
animal for a while and returning it to the SPCA. We need temporary
foster
homes for animals who cannot stay
at the SPCA because they are sick, too young or pregnant.

This answers our questions about the fees and so on:)
