You're probably gonna wanna get a drink or something 'cause this may be a bit long.

Here's what i know:

1)i fucking LOVE music

2)i want to create music, especially jungle/d&b

3)i don't want to spend a bunch of $ only to find out i suck at it/don't enjoy it (personally, i feel that i could make people feel goooooood dancing to my music....i got soul). As long as i enjoy doing it i am willing to invest in it.

4)that i'm fucking clueless on how to do this. Oh, i can play around with fun little sites for kids and create a beat but they lack in the actual library department....y'know....they don't have the sounds my mind is creating...

Well, i'm not totally clueless...i'm smart enough to know when to ask for help and hey, i dig some of your music (and haven't heard most or any) so fix me up some knowledge.

What I Need To Know

1)best free site that has a respectable library of sounds or an easy way to get sounds from anywhere on the net/my computer

[ www.modplug.com ] seems to kinda maybe be what i'm looking for? i haven't tinkered yet so i don't really know what it does (got it off the links page here on ravewave)

2)Since i'll enjoy it i'll want to start spinning vinyl because of the connection to the record...plus to me "dj" and "spinning" do not exist without records, i'm old that way :)

How much cash is it gonna cost me to start? As long as the first piece can produce sound, i'm happy....i can add on later. I'll probably want used but i'd rather spend $300 once for something good than $90,$125,$150 for progressivly better crap.....

And then the vinyl.....say 20 records....i can find more used later (part of the fun will be finding records)

3)if anyone is willing to give me tips (you tell or show me....i go home and and try it on my gear.....i don't wanna fuck up your stuff..or waste your time) it would be appreciated....

This is something i'm passionate about.....thanks for taking the time to read it

well, for production, what you could do is get some software for that to try it out. Scott will try and pimp Buzz onto you, which is free to use but not that easy. Everyone will hate me, but I would recomend starting off with something that doesn't require 400 hours of time in front of a computer learning what keys are what notes and learning hex codes to modify stuff, so I'd recomend for begining Fruity Loops. You can download it off Kazaa, and it's fairly straight forward to use. For editing of samples or ripping from movies or a mic on your computer or whatever, I recomend Cool Edit Pro 2, also easily obtainable on Kazaa and you can probably find tons of stuff on how they work.
From there, just tinker and mess around and learn, that's the fun part.
Oh yeah, and listen to my music. It's all done in Fruity Loops with help of Cool Edit 2 to edit samples. :)

i'd say that "only for the skilled and patient" is a good description of anyone who makes music, or any other artform for that matter...

thanks for the advice.....$pooky i'm listening to Goodbye right now, it's funky...doesn't fit my mood though, about 3 months ago i would have delved into it...

i'll soon graduate to more time consuming but fullfilling programs...

Don't worry, I know. :) Very few people can stand my music. I'm currently messing around with throwing breaks into acid. Sounds nifty. :)

actually i dig it...but i know i can only listen to it when i'm in the right frame of mind (dark)

i tried to download Fruity and all i got was this lousy t=-shirt

...actually i got flooded by a barrage of screens (about 80) telling me not to use shareware basically...which upset and froze my computer...

....so i'm back at square one except now i won't go near kazaa to get it

haha, don't download it from web sites. Download from WinMX or KaZaA or Soulseek or some P2P program.

making music???
get used to fruity loops, then get rid of it
i'm definetly not patient enough to make music on computers, only track and edit on them...it REALLY does take alot of patience

Reason is a fairly good program, but hella complicated, if you are just getting used to that program, do yourself a favor and don't press tab, man that shit fucked me up, it was all downhill from there...

have fun with it, but your gonna be looking at ALOT more than $300 worth of spending if you plan on getting serious into it...

and tipsy....... :p

reason isn't complicated at all!

Reason has a sampler, a phrase sampler, a synth, a granular synth (in reason 2.0), and it has about 7 effects. Buzz has something like 1,000 different effects available, and some of them crash a lot. That's complicated.

yeah, reason wasactually a really cool app to use, and pushing tab made it cooler to use cause you could configure effects the way you want to...

only thing i couldn't figure out was how to use the automation..

i still dun have automation down as well as i'd like it, but i still don't put much time into using it, so what can i expect

reason doesn't have a huge selection of effects but like Neoform says, pushing tab let's you hook whatever you want, to whatever else, you can do ALOT of stuff with that...again, i haven't spent enough time fiddling with that shit to know what i'm saying

you can do much more complex setups in buzz than in reason or fruityloops though, thats why I use it.
