why do all top notch studio still have analog tape machines? scott i know for a fact that engineers transfer to all sorts of vintage analog mediums to get warmth, saturation, hiss and crackles and i totally accept and enjoy that. if analog is shitty then why hasent everything been converted?

i'm no longer posting in this thread as long as neoform also posts in it. his arguments are based on what he thinks goes on when in fact he doesn't know the truth

this is a response to paul.

I was discussing this with an engineer before, about the tape. They will use it if they need a certain kind of sound.. like for triphop, it's good to have a lofi tape recording... but for something else that might not apply. Almost everything analog has been switched over to digital, but it's up to the engineer to know which is best.

Almost all big studios use protools, and that is digital.

i would say some stuff now, but y would i repeat what scotty p already said?

he's right, a compressed digital track layed on vinyl will sound mad warmer than just burning it on a cd.

for vinyl: On a properly set up audiophile system, you would hear that warmth. However, if the vinyl is old, the mixer is cheap, a wire sucks, or the speakers are crap... then things wouldn't be so hot sounding.

I wouldn't say never, but I would say much of the time people just assume vinyl sounds amazing and forget that one cheap wire can mess up all the sound output in which case any vinyl goodness would be lost.

I believe the two main benefits of vinyl are the following: 1) You can physically move it while it's playing, and scratch. 2) There are many rare vinyls, so you can make your track collection more exclusive.
