-House -Trance -Techno -Breakbeat -Jungle -Hardcore -Downtempo Ask someone who listens to Freeform and he'll be the one saying that psytrance and trance is the samething. I voted Trance but I would have voted for Hardcore if I had the choice. |

Firstly, "far" is a relative term. Especially if you're trying to explain from your point of view (psytrance dj). And so would it be for me if I'd be the one trying to explain that Freeform is NOT like Happy Hardcore (to prevent it to be associate with hhc's...erm... you know...) (cough). Anyway, what I do know is that the "Psy" is a subgenre of Trance that started surfacing in the late 80s with Goa and the other super fawked up amazing & trippin' shizzle subgenres ("know wat im sayin' g?"). Sure... some folks could simply say that Freeform is simply Trance but played at 170bpm. But they can't... since it's exactly THAT: faster. Simple no?! Samething with Psytrance... trance melodie with that extra psy sounds. It's in human nature's instinct to be able to tag, name or associate someone or something. I agree that sometimes they look too far. Not that easy to go back to the roots huh? |

You're saying that psy-trance began with goa, i agree.. but trance is still far from psy-trance, cuz goa isn't the same thing as trance.. trance didn't started in goa.. they both have major differences on the construction of the track both trance and psy-trance are my favourite styles of musik, and I surely not agree on the point that they both started from goa or goa-trance, whatever, and that they sound "similar" |

As far as music goes, it's hard to determine wich styles should be placed in the same category. I'll give it a try. Trance Psy trance Techno House breakbeat jungle/drum & bass hardcore freeform/happy hardcore industrial/ebm hip hop/rnb downtempo dance/pop I tried to include everything electronic, while respecting differences between styles. Of course, it all depends on one's perception. Someone who listens only to hip hop wouldn't really make the difference between trance and psy trance. Same as someone who doesn't like high bpm wouldn't care wether it's gabber or freeform. I'm pretty sure this isn't perfect. |

The structure and speed differences between subgenres sometimes push people to classify... sometimes not. If you wanna fit your god damn vote in a 7 choice poll... you gotta be ready to sacrifice whatever "music solidarity group" you associate yourself with. |

There's probably alot of people that would say that french filter funk is no-where near the same music as UK Hard House, which in reality is very true. The problem is that if you sub-divide that, you have to sub-divide everything else. Then it gets to the point where even in down-tempo you have sub-genres, like "ambient-techno" and "New Wave". Then it get's to the point where people say, "I hate progressive trance, but Tech-Trance is the way to go". Then you start mixing genres and you end up with Neurofunk and Anthem-Breaks. This thread is a testament to how picky electronic music fans are... |
