That is the worst hypocritical statement I have heard in a long long time. "It isnt a hateful racism" ... my gawd, racism is hateful period.

email i just received from Aria:

"You should know that posting e-mails on your web-site with no permission is illegal and you should take it off before you receive a legal letter from us.

As far as calling us racist on your web-site, it's a personal attack and we will take actions against you!

We are far to be racist and most of our employes are non whites and any of my allegations are far to be racist.

You should act with jugement!

I guess they went to my website, where I posted all of our correspondence so far. I have broken no laws, so they are welcome to take whatever "legal" action they see fit.

here is the response I sent them:

" Jean-Frederic,

There is nothing illegal about any of my actions. I don't require your permission to post our correspondence on my website. You are welcome to consult with your lawyers regarding this issue. I understand that we have differing opinions regarding your racist door policy, but that does not translate into any kind of crime on my part. I have also posted our entire conversation on several message boards. And by the way, thank you for visiting my website.

Best of luck,
Benjamin Hunting."

Has anyone else had any contact with Aria about this new policy?

Ya. I'm not from Quebec. I don't understand french.

Anyway, I don't make a habit of making fun of people for not understanding languages or grammar. BUT this guy is an asshole.

I just thought it was funny because since he wrote it wrong, it almost sounds like he is admitting he is racist. We are FAR to be racist.

Remarkable post. Ben, you're awesome. The emails you've had are really interesting and I don't think they are privilaged information, as Jean-Francois implies. I found a book a few years back called "Letters from a nut" which was a series of ridiculous letters the author had sent to major corporations, and the subsequent replies that were sent back. The fact that your letters were sent to the "info" address is what makes it public domain, so you're clean.

Now the only thing Aria could do, would be to try and hit you with a slander or defemation of character suit if they can prove that any loss of income is directly due to your comments and that your comments were diliberately false. Again, I think you're all good, but I got weak translation skills.

aria is not the only club to discriminate against hip hop fashion in montreal or even the rest of the world. From what I gather from other conversations i have had with people in the know, the policy will apply to white patrons as well. There are many clubs that do not tolerate hats, sneakers, baggy pants...ect.If Aria applys this fairly to people of all races I believe that this policy is within the right of the club.As someone who has been to Aria often I can say I have never seen any trouble in the main room.I am not saying that all hip hop afectionados are gang members.I have never seen gang violence attributed to lovers of edm.I am sure there has been some, but most likely not anywhere in the frequency of the latter.Just my 2 cents, but aria reserves the right to protect its patrons who are only there to have fun from those who are only there to cause shit.

if the policy discriminates equally, then they should not have singled out a particular ethnicity in their public statement. At the VERY least, there should be a public apology, at the VERY least in print media.
Aria does not have the right to "protect it's patrons" by discriminating against an entire racial group.
ARIA should seriously reconsider which staff members they allow to make public statements that represent their club.

I confirm what he just said (and I know what i'm talking about), so don't worry about it Ben ;)

Amazing email by the way; I'm glad to see that there are a couple of smart people around here who know how to express themselves and prove their point in a decent and clever way...

i agree completely with you that the statement was offensive. As far as the fashion thing goes though, you have to admit it is within their right and non discriminatory.People who want to dress how they want will just go elsewhere. The only thing is that clubs that let you dress how you want are becoming rarer and rarer due to a handful of shit disturbing trouble makers. You cant stop gang violence,
but it can be prevented in afterhour establishments.
