DAMN big diffrence. If I got see fitty, I'm going to hear fitty do his shit and not have Q-Bert beat-juggling and scratching like a crazy motherfucker all the time regardless of who is suposed to be showcased, just like if I'm going to the DMCs I'm not going to listen to an MC do his thing.

When Cliff Burton died and Metallica was auditioning for a new bass player, Les Claypool walked in with a 6 string fretless bass. After jamming together, Metallica told Les "What the fuck are you doing here, go start your own band! If we let you into Metallica, you'll upstage us with your playing."

If people are going to see DJ Whoever, then they're execting a show by DJ Whoever. If they're off to see DJ Whoever w/MC Whatever, then that's what they're going to go see. If they're going to see MC Whatever (who just happens to have DJ Whoever dropping beats) then they're going to see MC Whatever and not DJ Whoever scratching and trying to upstage the MC.

BALANCE and EXPECTATIONS. The second someone wants to turn up their volume or lower someone else's, it's not about the music anymore, it's about "me me me", and it should never be about "me", it should be about the music.

Seriously, 911, if you want to get ahead find yourself a dj and create an act. We did, now look at us - WE DRIVE THE SCHOOL BUS!

Just use your intuition.

Do lyrics through out the whole set -in your eyes (or ears)- always sound good to you? Are there certain parts where you find lyrics compliment or disparage the track.

Listen to yourself; when do you find that a track can go well with what you have to say?

Personally, like many have already mentioned, I Love and Hate and hate MC'ing, and to me, it all comes down to when the MC opens his mouth... regardless of what he says -considering I don't grasp it half the time anyways.

For example, DJ Freaky Flow and MC Flipside. These two guys are fucking wicked at what they do, because they balance their skills out evenly through out their sets... Figuratively speaking, when they work together, they're like two peas in a pod -or something like that.

Hope that gives ya' insight.

BO SELECTAH! INSIDE!

a) if the music is original

b) if the music is meant to be mc'ed over (e.g. breakbeat/scratch records)

MC's suck. All MC's - professional, amateur, whatever. I have heard MC's murder sets by the most talented HC and HHC DJ's. MC's have no place over DJ'd music at a rave or party. It's ridiculous. It makes me reach for my revolver. It makes me stick a long metal finger down my throat. It makes me eat shit for breakfast. I hate it. Die Die Die.

MC's are for announcing acts, or being integrated into live acts.

from my experiences with mc's, theres been a couple of times, that they pumped me up, and made me interact with the music more, and everything just werked magically together.
other times (much more often) the mc's repeat the same boring flows, same lyrical structure, hogging as much time as they could, trying to overcome the whole sound and be a superstar...resulting in me having to tell them to stop, or just cutting the mic off, adding an awkward vibe to my set and its just no fun.

even times when the mc is amazing, but just hogging the mic, trying to get something in every second of each track, and ruining thier presence in the mix...

im always down to hear a talented mc drop sum shit over sum banging beats.... unfortunately i havent heard my fair share of impressive ones....

please do put my words to shame, i definately dont hate them, but more talent and organisation is needed in my opinion, generally speaking (out my ass of course)

ok, so our issue in mtl is that there is not enough talent gracing the mic for the dj's to feel comfortable in allowing an mc on the set.

fair to say i think.

no, the issue is that the words "talent" and "mc" are antonyms worldwide, no matter what rave you go to.

its not about talent its just plain prefered here not to have mcs (opposite of mcs lining up to spit lyrics like in toronto)

I'm pretty sure there's room for MC's out there... But I see where where Ben's comming from; Listening to MC Gobstopper makes me want to either shoot myself... or preferably him -repeatedly
