please, don't make history conclusions based on a Ridley Scott movie.
the western roman empire fell because they ran out of small people to supply the bloodthirsty demand of the roman citizen.
the eastern roman empire, Byzantine, was well and kicking it because it has a good population of small people.

but really

-foreign threats ( barbarians; the Goths* , the Francs , the Wisigoths, the Vandals, the Sueves, the Huns, etc... and the Persians.)
- moral and cultural decline and decay
- christianity
- political corruption
-not too bright emperors
-internal strife between the senate and the military

* btw this is the true origine of the Goths. A rebellious group of people against established mainstream culture and its commercial way of life. Today so call "goths" think it is about all the music and sombre mood and dark clothing. Which is ironic because they became themselve an established, well identified mainstream and commercial cultural social group.

... like we all don't already know that ....
pfffewww!

and forgive my holywood culture... but what the heck is that movie ur talking about ?

oh by he way, when the EMPIRE fell, it wasn't a republic anymore.
so there was nooooo internal problems between senate & military since something like 400 years...
for byzantine.. the reason they survived till he end of the middle ages is because they were trades people(which is not small people) ... one of the only trading spots between asia and europe/africa, they also had great defenses and such..

and for the barbarians, they didn't became the civilised people your talking about, they couldnt understand lots of the technologies of rome, so they just destroyed it... then came the middle ages.

The Roman Empire was so STRONG is took centuries for it to fall. I'm listing aspects which contributed to its decline, whensoever it happen in its existence.
An empire doesn't just fall the next day like a brick wall. Look at United State of America, we are seeing its decline, but it won't fall overnight.

the midget thing is a joke.

The History of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, a major literary achievement of Eighteenth Century, was written by the English historian, Edward Gibbon.

"According to Gibbon, the Roman Empire succumbed to barbarian invasions because of a loss of civic virtue among its citizens. They had become lazy and soft, outsourcing their duties to defend their Empire to barbarian mercenaries, who then became so numerous and ingrained that they were then able to easily take over the Empire. Romans, he believed, had become effeminate, unwilling to live the military lifestyle.

In addition Gibbon attacked Christianity. Christianity, he says, created a belief in another world, that is to say that a better life existed after death. This fostered indifference among the Roman citizens who believed they would live a better life once they died, thus sapping their desire to maintain and sacrifice for the Empire."

It is true that Bizantine was a military super power. They emphasized the heavy cavalry (the cataphracts).
They had a military philosophy not unlike Sun Tzu Art of War. They were better traders not only because of geographical position (constantinopole), they also had a brilliant logistic system for caravan transport.

that is such an obtuse statement on your part. I was talking about the origin of the word and idea of GOTH, not the actual descendants of the gothic people.

And what technologies of Rome? Rome didn't have any far reaching technological advance in its last couple centuries. They build great roads and public works. They had a great military. The gunpower and paper were already invented by the Chinese by this time i think.

The DARK AGE came before the middle ages, in Europe it was bad, it actually regressed. Meanwhile, in the middle east, great achievement was made in astrology, medecine, architecture and mathematics (Kitab al-mukhtasar fi Hisab Al-Jabr wa-al-Moghabalah. algebra anyone?)
