good luck tracking a dynamic ip address to a user, let alone to an actual person.
well, all ISP, even if they say they don't and they can't, log and keep track of which IP theirs users had when they connect to their network, quite easy to do and it's also the default on most systems. |

most isp keep logs for years and even backup them on tapes (with other data) to keep them for more years. |

you're telling me that ISP's keep logs of every packet i send/recieve along with every user on their network for years?
i probably transfer about 10gigs up and 10 gigs down a week.. that's about 1000 terabytes of info.. now assuming they're tracking just times, ip's.. that's still a buttload of info.. easily in the petabytes if you count all the users on their network.. you honnestly think they retain useless info like that for years...? and yes it is useless, because transaction logs are useless to an ISP after a month. |

not packets, the dynamic IPs you use.
And some asshole isp might log your dns queries, quite easy to do, but I don't know any ISP doing that. sniffing a connection uses too much space and is a fucking pain to analyze more than 15 seconds ;) As a sysadmin, we are keeping 4 years of logs on our syslog servers and Tapes that backup them are kept 2-3 years before being reused. |

so what IS saved?
times to IP's that connected to other IP's? explain to me how this somehow proves what was transfered? If i were taken to court i'd beat those logs to hell showing that there is NO evidence at all as to what got transfered. Timestamps with IP's showing who connected to whom proves nothing.. for all those logs can be saying.. i pinged someone.. |

What is logged might be:
Today, at 17:52: user XXX logged with right password. This host now has this IP. Today, at 17:54: user XXX logged out. After this, it's the court who decide if the ISP needs to show it logs, as it was done in the US. It's all I have to say! Browsing and downloading a .torrent is not illegal at all, it's absolutetly no copyright material. It's like if you buy a gun in a store. Guns are made to kill, you can buy one, but you won't be under arrest for murder until you got caught killing someone with the bullet you bought you at that store, which recorded you buying them, and then, the police will check your gun to see if it fired one of thoses bullets, etc etc... |
