What he means is you want speakers that are "flat" in the sence that there is no bass boosting. If they have "good bass", then you aren't really hearing the bass properly as what you have is being enhanced by the speakers and will more than likely not sound the same on other systems, though by how much diffrent is up to how you master...

so basically, i'm looking for a quality speaker, that's clear, and plays everything at their proper levels not boosting anything, playing them at the level that they were sampled at

am i close?

a lot of hip hop producers use monitor systems with subwoofers.. Tannoy for instance makes a really good subwoofer that pairs well with their line of monitors... Although that would blow your budget for sure... Room size/shape is also a big factor and can greatly affect the sound you get from your speakers

well thats what i've been looking at, i've seen a couple monitor pairs that come with enviroment phasing...or something, that allow you to customize the sound for wherever your using the speakers

yeah, speaker placement also matters..

you put em on your desk you'll hear more bass if your right in front of em, but you'll lose all that bass if you step back 3 feet..

well, i'd probably have them mounted on either side of my set up around ceiling height facing down towards me

Ian: for me it's the opposite, I hear more bass when I step back in the room

thats horrible. if you have no choice, go for it, if not, forget the fact taht it looks cool, its not efficient. ear level is what you want.

my fav setup is having 2 ear-level speakers in front of you, and 2 speakers that are ear-level when standing up. covers the room so well..

you have a lot to learn before doing 9 point surround production. in fact, i think you would be the first. never heard of such format.

the next big thing will be 10.2 in a few years.

i question how big it'll be..

most people can get really good surround sound from 4 speakers..
