Would the SP-404 be useful for psytrance production at all? Is it rendered obsolete by VSTs and the like? I'm looking for some hardware that will make my production sound and 'feel' better. Would anybody suggest that I do or don't buy it, knowing what they know?

my buddy just sold his mobile pre for 50 bucks...
my advise... if you have a laptop go for fire wire... if you have a desktop... go for a serial if you can't afford fire wire. the mobile pre is a decent temporary recording solution thats better than an onboard card, but don't spend more than 50-60 bucks on it cuz you are gunna want to replace it fairly fast.

Physical samplers are rendered obsolete by pretty much the basic audio-production software, let alone the insane shit you can do with samplers like Kontakt. Hardware does not mean better. 99% of the time you can find something just as good as any hardware you'll ever buy in a VST, even free ones.

there's a joy to be had in having a hands on dedicated unit
that you can even carry around with you and sample with internal mic (though even that is limited in scope) sometimess less is more. how much fun is a rinkydink casio sampler keyboard thingy? so much! sure it is rendered obsolete by even a 486 AT PC but it has that immediate charm inherent to dedicated audio toys. sure you can reproduce the 12bit audio sampling and sequencing feel of an mpc 60 but there is a reason why it still fetches high dollar on he used market it's fun to be able to have different tools at hand though limiting it has its qualities in its limitations in that it has a defined framework for you to use out the box it's just up to one to find what limitations one is willing to work with and what toys are pleasing to ones sensibilities just my 2cents on that... and yeah i'm still shopping those cards thanks for the input and good luck on the sales

I think 100 for the mobile pre is reasonable.. I think I sold mine for that much..
It has the advantage of not needing power (if you use firewire on a PC laptop you ussually only get a 4pin unpowered connection) |
