Pretty sad considering the fact that you don't really need to squeeze the headphone to make it stay on your head. |

Before mixing, I never really understood why a DJ would only put one ear on the headphones and literally break his neck in the process. However, I have found myself using this technique most of the time and it has nothing to do with "looking cool". For me, it's all about the balance between the headphones sound and the monitors. Some people like to mix entirely in the headphones, but some like to use the monitors as well. At some point during a mix, I usually want to have a perfect balance between the sound of the monitors and the sound of the headphones. I also like to make this balance vary a little bit to better see if the tracks are well "locked". The fastest way to do this is simply to get my ear closer or farther away from one of the ears of the headphones, this giving me the "I want to look cool" look. However, I do this purely for practical reasons. |

I keep the headphone on my right ear all the time, and nothing on the left (unless there's shitty monitors and I need to/can split the signal)
just kinda have the left headphone like behind my ear? |

the headphone game is very complicated
i matter of personal preferance personally i need to have them split and fliped (diagonal left/right, L=r and R=l) and i could just as soon do without moniters... what do other peeps think? |

i can beatmatch without headphones
then again i might have to trainwreck but thats just polyrhythms jazzcore |

Yeah it's not trainwrecking! It's complicated polyrhythems, like those African drummers do! You people just don't get it ! |

i like those african beats
way more complicated but so good same for indian music's parameters, way different stuff .... - keep the headphone on my right ear all the time, and nothing on the left (unless there's shitty monitors and I need to/can split the signal) just kinda have the left headphone like behind my ear?- Screwhead what he said |

I like to hear the sound in the room so I take them off often, but to beat match I keep the signal stereo and line it up with the headphones on my head completely... once the tracks are lined up properly ill usually take one ear off to get a balance between my headphones and the main sound keeping an ear on the precision of the beatmatch in one headphone. Depending on the quality and placement of the monitors and mixer options like the eq on the monitor channel of the djm 500, sometimes I'll press the earphones to my ear harder to cut out invading frequencies to get a clean check up on the tightness of the beatmatch during the mix. If the track is just rolling..Ill do this with my hands or if I need my hands for mixing (sliders and eq-ing), Ill do it with my shoulder. I've tried mixing using the master cue and the headphones on completely all the time, at home its ok or for precision purposes, but in a party it makes me feel isolated from the crowd so usually I'll use the monitors at that point. In the end... I dont really care what the hell I look like...I'll do whats necessary to gurantee a top quality set. Besides if my neck hurts..its usually because of the weight of my now extinct dreadlocks or the headbanging during my set. ;) |

whats even funnier is when you go to a records shop and there's a guy listening to his stuff with only one ear and trying to look cool...
come on, if your going to pay 15-18$ for one record, you might as well listen it well wit both ears.... |

The people who try to look cool generally end up loosing in the end...
HEY THE MIXER LOOKS REALLY COOL WHEN THOSE FUNNY BARS REALLY HIT THE RED, I'M SO COOL!. I LOOK COOL WHEN I SPIN THE RECORD BACKWARDS AND PLAY IT AGAIN. WOW WHEN I TURN THIS BASS KNOB UP ALL THE WAY, IT MAKES THINGS SOUND COOL AND VICARIOUSLY THAT MAKES ME COOL. |

Yeah, as opposed to all the people who take noises and sounds and arange them together to make "songs" and "art" and think they're better than everyone else because, like, no one's ever made "music" before them, it's all repetitious crap. |

Getting back to the topic, i mix in my phone's and take them off when i throw in my track, then, when i need to check up on the mix, i put them back on, or sometimes just one phone.. i dunno, i just go with the flow.. Unless the monitors are too loud or crappy, i mix in my headphones as well.. depends on the situation once again. :)
Have fun! |
