I'm guessing no one looked at the screenshot where he clearly has VLC on the taskbar..
Generally, VLC is the best - it's got (almost) all the codecs built in, so you don't need to risk downloading from shady sites for codec packs.. If you download a movie that says you need a codec to play it, it's 99.9% trying to get you to infect yourself.. So far I've only ever had one video that it wouldn't play and had to resort to MPC with the K-Lite pack because it was encoded in some obscure Indeo5 setting... seriously who the fuck rips a DVD in a video codec that like NOTHING PLAYS?

Try downloading a "Media Player Codec Pack" its because your media player doesn't have the right codec's :P
[ download.cnet.com ] Not %100 it'll work for you, but it did for me the first time I downloaded A couple of movies that didn't work at first

Do you have the latest version of vlc?
Did you check the file size before playing the video? Did you have the same problem with every episode in the pack? Did you try running the repair file option in vlc? Mr show is fucking hilarious!!

reported issue , on xp . you can try changing the video output to something else like directx , opengl or some other lower mechanism of vidoutput , if its a known container like avi.
you get the silent treatment in vlc , same as what i noticed more in the newer builds , stall on vid or doest play it at all. do you get sound in the back while stuck with the cone ? vlc imo is currently instable , the windows mechanism (main_vm playlist_vm) are broken as as soon as you undock it weird things start happenning , that never happened in 0.8.x builds 0.9.x started showing a preference for certain files , and now we have this . some files on old comps can only be played locally , and others need certain pref parameters. but like wu implied , make shure you got the whole thing first. good luck , also have a look in the advance preferences about access modules and output modules , under input codec and video respectively . you might have something set to high for your card. i notice you run seven , but is that on an old machine ? most importantly poke at vlc's console
do a control + m > set verbose to 2 . play the vid see whats up see also codec info of the file with control + i
