A young woman who abducted an infant girl from a Winnipeg home, bashed her head on the sidewalk and abandoned her near a playground has pleaded guilty. Nikita Eaglestick, 22, was charged with attempted murder and attempted aggravated assault in connection to the Sept. 1, 2009 attack on 14-month-old Vanessa Houle. The infant victim was seriously injured in the attack, for which no motive has ever been publicly revealed. Police said at the time of her arrest that Eaglestick was drinking at a party at the residence of Vanessa's parents prior to the assault, which happened in early morning darkness near a Manitoba Housing complex and playground on Chudley Street. The attack on the baby was halted after a man in the area heard screams and went to go see what was happening. He said emergency crews have told him Vanessa would surely have died if he hadn't intervened. The infant was put on breathing tubes in the hospital, but her condition quickly stabilized. She eventually made a full recovery.  |
