Ableton Live is a revolutionary music production tool that utilizes the concept of live looping. It is currently the industry standard for musicians everywhere, particularly for Live electronic sets and electronic music production, but it is not confined to just that. It is a very versatile piece of software, easy to understand, and a staple for many successful and talented artists.

I am an experienced Ableton Live user and instructor. Born and raised in Ireland, I taught Ableton Live Production techniques at the Triskel Art Centre in Cork City as part of the Cultural Connections workshop in April 2006, and arrived in Montreal in May 2006. I have been an avid Live user for the past 3 years or so, and am also experienced in the use Reason, Cubase, and Protools. I also play live electro/techno/rock shows incorporating guitar, vocals, and other instruments using Live. I am currently offering classes in all aspects of electronic and organic music production, covering all genres, tailor made for the participants.

so much so, that I decided to cover it... The only motivation behind this cover is that I thought it would make a nice electronic track... and i'm pretty happy with the result...

I did it with Ableton Live, took one loop from the original track, which can be heard at the start of the track - added some filter, wrote some drum patterns, and did all the synths/bass using a Korg MS-10... beautiful one-oscillator synth, first made in 1978... loaned to me by a friend... I also did the vocals...

ok, I really didn't mean to start an argument here between french and english speakers... I've detected animosity from certain english speakers here towards the french as well as french towards the english... I just happen to be on the receiving end of more french hostility here, which is normally dissipated once I explain 'que je suis irlandais, et j'ai arrive ici, il y'a une annee'... most quebecers have some irish heritage, like the rest of the planet, which definitely helps me... so eventhough the referendum is over etc etc. and french is a much stronger language in the city, which is a good thing, is there really a need for the hostility?... most people here would say no, and that is something I acknowledge... Like I said before, many of the quebecoises I've met here have been the most genuinely nice people I've met in Montreal... Plus I'm learning more and more as I go... It's just a little bit more difficult here than it would be in france for example, because they speak a more standardised french...

however the ones who remain hostile, the ones who say 'learn our fucking language' are normally the ones who make no effort at all to help you when you try to make an effort by speaking broken french... they're the ones who look to the sky and speak to you in english like you're an idiot, instead of speaking to you in french a little bit more slowly so you'll understand... it's counter productive... and frankly pretty rude from an outsiders perspective... especially when that outsider speaks french to them, eventhough it isn't perfect... Like I said, every french (from france) who I've ever spoken french to has told me that I'm doing well, even when it's not true... sans exceptions!...

Also, like it or not, Montreal's uniqueness and style is due to it's mix of cultures, particularly french and english, so like it or not, the english and the french speaking population are co-dependent... the local economy has thrived on it since the very start, and still does...

in summary: life's too short for fighting

i'd believe it... you shorten your vowels almost to the point where they're non-existent...

on the other hand, I've heard that the reason there's a drawl in the southern states of the USA, i.e. long vowels, is because of the heat.. because it's too hot to speak quickly there...

maybe accent is influenced by climate..

I was just at the depanneur and some guy asked me 'tu travaille pas ici?'... 6 syllables, yet somehow he managed to fit it into 3 syllables - 'vai-pas-ci?'... I had to ask the guy 3 times to repeat himself before I understood him... I felt like an idiot...

I've met a few people in this city who really hate people who can't understand their french, BUT to be fair it's not the most accessible french in the world... I could totally understand someone being brought up in an english family in the west island and never learning french here... why?, because it's impossible to understand... I can't say i'd blame them, I know a few who've tried and failed... I'm making progress, but mostly because my girlfriend is french...

Another thing, when I go to france and speak broken french there, I always get praised for my efforts and get told that I'm doing well... When I speak broken french here, I get quite a lot of attitude off some people...

On the other hand, some of the french speakers I've met in Montreal are the most decent people I've met here, and are very nice about my lack of understanding of their language, and also I appreciate and understand the history behind it... I am after all, Irish, and we're not strangers to oppression from the british either... It doesn't mean I hate on every single person with a British accent I meet though...
