In recent years, a small cluster of brain cells (i.e. neurons) dubbed the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), has been identified as the master biological clock's probable site. Following a complicated pathway which involves a part of the nervous system called the Sympathetic Nervous System, the SCN eventually sends that information to a small gland at the base of the brain called the Pineal Gland. And it is melatonin, a hormone, that is produced by this gland. The amount of light seems to determine how much pineal melatonin is actually released from the pineal and secreted into the blood stream. The more light, the more release is suppressed. The less light, the more melatonin the blood carries. Light suppresses melatonin release.

What does that mean for the changing seasons?
During those seasons when the photoperiods are long, in the spring and summer, melatonin secretion is at its lowest since it can only be secreted at a significant rate during the relatively fewer hours of darkness. On the other hand, the closer we move toward the winter solstice, the fewer hours of light there are each day and, correspondingly, the longer the period of time each day when melatonin can be released into the blood stream.

What does melatonin do?
Once melatonin is in the bloodstream, what is the result? There are no very, very clear answers right now, for this quite a new field of research. However, one result found over and over again is that melatonin indirectly causes body temperature to drop. And what does that have to do with loss of pep, loss of energy, with sluggishness and perhaps with eventual depression The answer to that is not completely clear either. However, it is instructive to know that when we fall asleep, our body temperature drops. We also know that a drop in body temperature, sleep, and high blood levels of melatonin go together. Perhaps we might one day discover that the elevation of melatonin blood levels brought about by the dousing of light at night, in its creation of lowered body temperatures, is the event which actually brings about sleep. Scientific evidence does not yet permit us to make that statement, but it is a good possibility to speculate on!

A way, perhaps, to conceptualize all this is in some respects we operate as if we were solar powered, at least where sleep and wakefulness are concerned. Light powers the battery, in part by preventing too much melatonin from entering the blood stream, and as light disappears, melatonin release begins and possibly plays a role in triggering sleep. Then, as the sun once again begins to rise above the horizon, melatonin release is once again slowed, body temperature rises, and the movement toward wakefulness begins. If all of this were true, then we would predict that as the nights get longer and melatonin is present more often in the blood, then the amount of time we spend either sleeping or feeling sleepy will also increase. We don't know why this is not true of everyone, for it definitely is not.

Had a wicked time over all. Many negative and positive angles. I felt like I lived in a WORLD OF SHIT so I left after finding out that money was stolen. It was the third incident of thievery reported to me throughout the night. Security anyone. I understand why you're mad bitching tchandro but what would you do if someone stole 1800 bucks from you just sit back and watch everyone leave? It's not an easy situation to be in. Big love. I got a rush being back in that same venue once again. Don't want to go on too much cause I just wrote like a 3-page review of this fucking event. All in all, it was ILL. I thought Oliver did play cause I saw him getting ready when I was leaving; all DJ sets were pushed back 1/2 hour in that room by the way, don't know if that played a part. Sorry I missed Pat and Maxx's set, but I was awake for 24 hours on 3 hours sleep and had to go.

I believe that children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone to fulfill my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me

I decided long ago
Never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I will live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity

Chorus:
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

And I decided long ago
Never to walk in anyone's shadows

Chorus:

I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me

And if by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love

1: yes I always want to kill stupid people
2: who doesn't?

If both 1 and 2 are true, and if everyone walks around thinking 99% of the world is stupid, what does that make you in the eyes of others. Stupid, that's what it makes you. In the eyes of others, at least. Maybe not everyone, but surely someone. And sure, you can just say that whoever thinks that is stupid also. It's tough to do but sometimes if you think like that you can realize that we're all locked in this stupid stupidity together and it's fucking funny, and life is funny, and it's possible to simultaneously love and laugh at people while thinking they're fucking morons. I know a lot of my friends are fucking stupid sometimes. But I don't curb stomp 'em -much. Anyways, you gotta try, think around it a little, and it'll make your day a lot happier. Ya, house music, as it's known, is good, i guess. But when you pick a whole big-ass style like that there's bound to be shit you like and shit you don't like, the more you get into it and realize all the different sub-genres and subtleties involved. I consider myself a tek-head in a sense but there's a lot of techno that's just shit, for me. Same with any style. Also, music is purely a matter of opinion (or at least, I like to think it should be).. if you really try to say that, for example, 'hip hop sucks!', well, the fact remains that some people have fun listening to it and derive enjoyment from it, and therefore it achieves its goal as music and as art. all you're really saying is 'i don't like hip hop', in this example. It's hard to escape these terms, but i'll say straight up that I think cheesy fucking house sucks, and a lot of house is ultra-cheesy commercialised crap. House, like trance, and now techno, has hit the radio, video, mainstream movie circuit and has become mutated, murdered and butchered in the process. But there's some nice minimal shit out there that I love (Alexi Delano, Casey Hogan, the Nordic Trax boys who are coming to MEG are wicked, Steve Bug, etc.) and there's some catchy tunes that grab me once in a while for sure.

Next point. since when did house start it all? I mean, that's a really long, tough argument. you can just as easily say that disco started it all. or jazz. or kraftwerk. or detroit. i think if you're arguing for house you're looking at the Paradise Garage which bred house names like Frankie Knuckles for example, but their clear predecessors were huge disco dj's, Larry Levan for example... that's were shit started on that side. And disco came from funk, Funkadelic, Parliament, etc., etc., it's always hard to nail down the origins, naaameaaan? food for thought.

It's the end of an era as Level 4 Productions announce the grand finale of Tekstyle Thursday at Bluedog. It's been exactly one year of weekly Tekstylin', we've had a blast and accomplished everything we set out to do, but now we're moving on. It's sad to make these decisions, but ultimately it comes from the heart and with the sadness comes liberation; without change there can be no growth.

The final Tekstyle bonanza will feature PREACH, who's knockin' skulls with stellar tek releases for Ascend/Default, Ben Sims' Symbolism label, Marco Bailey's Pornographic, Yaz & Miko's Edit Recordings, all in addition to being a fucking kick ass DJ, resident at Aria Fridays.

For the closing party we'll also have a whole slew of Level 4 DJs playing as Toltech, Simmetrik aka Simon G, Kilobyte and Freebass join original residents Kidstatik and Sarcastic. I'd like to see everyone out there to represent underground tek in MTL.

no one died, somehow -how does that happen when nine shots are fired, and six people are hit at close range. I guess its called fucking good luck, and a shitty gun. or both.
also, in the terribly shitty news of the weekend, somebody jumped off a building at a little loft party that maysr and toltech were playing at, and is in really bad shape. this sucks ass.
security, all that will help, but ultimately all of this crap will happen wherever: rock concerts, people fucking around in parks, on street corners, wherever humans that don't know each other very well gather together, there's bound to be incidents eventually.
and don't always assume it's either bikers or black people. this is, first of all, pretty tedious territory for anyone to speak on, but, a)the two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive and b) there are many other variations and permutations possible here: the club MAY be owned by bikers, who fucking knows? anyone? speak up.. surely bikers have something to do with it on some level, however far removed, maybe selling drugs to the crew that sells them in the club, maybe even further removed. Or maybe they straight out own it. Or maybe they sanction the club as territory to hells, or maybe its not their territory. maybe various bikers were fighting over the territory. If the club was biker owned why would anyone have to settle a drug-related dispute within the club? surely rival gangs/bikers would know not to infringe on the territory, and surely bouncers would search rival gang/biker-members accordingly? there are a lot of questions that none of us, I surmise, know the answers to. The bottom line is: what the fuck is this going to mean for clubs, for raves, for the industry. Or will it create a much needed split in the industry between Laval and Montreal, or better yet, between "organized", "legal" afterhours clubs and "underground", "illegal" raves... Okay I really have to shut up now. As usual, it's really late, I need to sleep and for some reason my brain is kicking into states of rapid mentalic dementia. doh. i hate it when this happens. Time to assume yogaistic self-relaxation schema.

I was at Arrival. In my opinion it was okay especially considering all the sketch that happened beforehand: location changed twice in the week before the party, and all that. Yes, there were huge piles of horse dung around (not that many, but a couple) and a friend of mine did complain that he was walking in shit, but I didn't see any tangible evidence of that on his shoes. In fact it seemed like all the piles were dry: like that's any consolation, I guess, when you can see 'em, when the sun comes up. Also a lot of no shows: Delta didn't play or Arne, nor did Ignition Technician or NYC's DJ Pauly, and the electro stage was cut... Maybe 5000 peeps were there, and one thing I must say was that the overall vibe was pretty good, people were dancing like mad, horse shit aside, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves that made it out there. The actual spot was beautiful, the same place as Arrival 1, out in the cornfields, right off the 20 about 40 minutes away from downtown. The sky was really clear you could see the stars all night, it was fun also cause the big DJs Thomas Krome and Punisher each played two sets, I guess to compensate for the guys that didn't show. Punisher, by the way, stole the freakin show, she's really tight, really funky techno from detroit. amazing shit. But ya, a lot of downs to a party that still managed to breathe some life.
