Great topic. With live p.a. pretty much anything goes. Obviously you can't play everything live (unless you want to bring 10 people on stage with you :P). I think that most try to play as much as they can live - usually the most expressive parts - and leave repetitive parts like basslines and some drums to the machines/sequencer (some people will just bounce them to audio), and focus their 'live' stuff on leads, tweaking, and the mixer.

I use Logic as my main sequencer (similar to Cubase) and I'd like to know how people handle the downtime between loading new tracks? Or does everybody just use Ableton Live?

Not sure I understand the question... are you referring to patches/sounds or recording actual audio? Saving and loading patches is done via MIDI, recording audio is done via the audio outs and your audio interface/soundcard.

heh sorry, didn't think the NR2 would need any explanation. ;)

It's basically the Nord Lead 2 in rack version (not the 2X and not the Electro). Here's the link at Clavia's site:

Click the left frame for specs, etc. Do a search in Google for "Nord Lead 2" or "Nord Rack 2" for reviews.

Cheers,

Selling the following items:

Korg MS2000R- MINT condition, comes with original box, manual, power supply: $350

Novation Drumstation - An 808 and a 909 in 1 rack unit with full MIDI and assignable outputs. No box or manual, but excellent condition and comes with power supply. $300

Emu Xtreme Lead 1 module - no box, no manual, but excellent condition and comes with power supply. It's a very tweakable little box and can make some nice acid and drilling bass lines: $250

Ensoniq ESQ-1 synth - the secret weapon of many acts and my very first synth - comes with original manual and power cord. Great condition but it needs the battery replaced if you want to save new sounds ($5 for the battery at Radio Shack if you want to do it yourself or $40 at any music store to have them do it for you): $250

Roland SDE-1000 delay unit - this dinosaur can really warp your signal (with VERY convenient real-time controls!) or give it a nice normal delay if used sparingly - $100 no box or manual but comes with power supply. Despite its age it is in great condition!

Alesis 3630 Compressor - MINT in box with manual and power supply. Used ONCE, literally. Daft Punk used this baby on Homework! $150

As you can see, these prices are VERY reasonable so therefore pretty firm. Questions, pic requests, etc. send to chungkingmansions AT [ gmail.com ]

Not an XXX site, the domain DOT XXX as in .xxx, [ .com ] [ .org ] etc. The US has become extremely right wing with this administration, and I see very little difference between Christian morals and 'official' or predominant US morals and values. I'm not saying the population all abide by these, obviously.

I'm not saying the UN wouldn't do the same thing. Personally, I'd much rather have the servers better distributed so countries share the role of 'internet sheriff', perhaps with one regulating body (NOT the UN). However, I'd rather things stay as they are than get the UN involved. The UN is completely useless and will just introduce a whole new level of bureaucracy and red tape.

As for the US allowing freedom of speech on the internet, I'd agree that so far the 'net has been relatively free from censorship (minus the RIAA/MPAA BS, but that's another story). However, if decisions like blocking the release of an '.xxx' domain because of complaints from conservative Christian groups are a sign of things to come, I'm all for replacing the US as governing body. The majority of internet users are not Christian, and US morals shouldn't be shoved down their throats.

Yea? Which factories and what do you import/export? I used to live in Shenzhen. My friend distributes a newsletter throughout Europe which is a directory of most of the major factories in China. I'm sure he'd love to know which factories you've had poor luck with so as not to recommend them to his clients.

The 'we made it we own it' argument is ridiculous. With that logic we should stop using paper. Why would any country want what has become an integral part of their economic infrastructure in the hands of a country like the US? They could easily cut off a country's access to information in the blink of an eye, and I would not put it past this administration to do so.

Again, for the right price, quality control in China can be second to none. If China = crap basically everything I own from my synths, computer hardware, clothing, furniture, etc. is crap because the majority of it was all made in China. People are slow to change, especially with stereotypes. It took 20 years before people stopped thinking "Made in Japan = crap" too.

I'm actually surprised that stereotype of 'Made in China = poor quality' is still so predominent. By that logic, 90% or more of the products you buy is 'poor quality'. The reality is that the quality of products made in China has more to do with foreign companies cutting corners to save on manufacturing costs. For the right price, Chinese factories will match your specs perfectly. If you want quality, you have to pay for it. Most companies prefer not to.

You're missing my point. It's not that she 'sold out' (whatever that means), it's that she was trying to justify it by saying she was 'starving in Sri Lanka'.

I lost all respect for M.I.A. after listening to her disgusting comment at this show: "I sold my music to Honda... but [that's ok because] I was starving in Sri Lanka when I was 9 years old!"

That is the most pathetic thing I've ever heard in my life. It would almost be funny if it were ironic. I give blowjobs in the alley for money... but that's ok because at one point my life sucked more than yours!

Everyone here pretty much summed up my thoughts on this party. I went a bit overboard and by 10am Sunday I was zoned and staring into space. I'll have to learn to pace myself better. :)

Also kudos to whoever was responsible for the sound... I could not get over it... absolutely amazing. This was my first Eclipse festival, and it certainly won't be the last. I look forward to next year!

Greetings everyone. It's really nice to see so many people into producing beats. Here is my setup:

Gear:
Ensoniq ESQ-1 synth
Novation Drumstation
Korg MS2000R
Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro
Midisport 2x2 interface

Computer:
PII IBM ThinkPad; 4GB HDD; 192MB RAM (the specs sucks, but coupled with Linux it is the PERFECT hardware MIDI sequencer)
OS: Debian Linux
Apps: seq24, Specimen, jack

I record onto a much more powerful desktop (running Linux as well) using Audacity. I can't say enough about how amazing a junk laptop plus Linux and seq24 is for sequencing and minimal sampling. It's designed for live use and is ROCK SOLID (even more so than Cubase on my desktop). Next up gear purchase wise is either a Nord Rack 2 or a Virus B. :)
