that doesn't mean she doesn't believe in equality. not all feminists are lesbian-hippies barking about equal pay.

"Women need to realize that while wearing provocative clothing is going to attract a man, the man is only going to see the woman as a potential sex partner, not as someone he may marry someday.

Feminists have sought to destroy the concept of femininity because it runs counter to their belief that men and women are identical human beings when they are not. Unfortunately, they have succeeded but we can still reverse this. Women need to return to the things that distinguished them before — such as motherhood — and stop flaunting their bodies and sexuality."

i think what christina's trying to say was that why CAN'T we faunt our sexuality and our bodies? why do we have to have this 'good wife' type image when men can fuck around and get away with it? but it's NOT apporpriate for us? men can use their good looks to get what they want- (if they have em) too, it goes both ways.

YES
and men flaunt their sexuality LIKE CRAZY, WAY more than girls do. maybe not by wearing slutty clothes, but in other ways.
it's VERY obvious that the stereotype only goes one way.

Christina can get away with it because its part of her act as an entertainer (and most ppl should get that) however I wouldn't suggest dressing to that degree in real life. We can however follow in her footsteps, in that we should enjoy our sexuality and not have to face repercutions. Wearing a short skirt is not an open invitation, should I/we choose to wear one..

just a few points:

1. as part of popular culture, it seems inherent that xtina is going to represent dominant values both in her image and music. i can point you to theorists if thats aa route you choose to argue. you should look at the kind of sexuality she is promoting, is it heterosexist? the kind of beauty, is it white, thin, etc? the kind of femininity, is it passive, emotional, etc?

2. 3rd wave feminism and the focus on the contradiction/irony possible in everyday experience, and how to use this a tool of subversion. any text on the 3rd wave should touch on this, also another good route to argue.

3. multiplicity of meanings in texts, nuff said.

4. there was something else but i forget now.

just some ideas you could pursue.

I didnt read most of the comments, but with regards to the article and the original question. I believe that Christina is a modern feminist.

Why?

I figure because in this day and age, the idea of feminism has become a little vague. And simply has reduced itself to sexuality.

So what exactly is feminism?

Much like the article states, " Feminism is defined as “the principle that women should have political, economic and social rights equal to those of men.” So once women have achieved that state --where they eaual; politically; economically; and even socially. What would feminism be? Nothing, really. It would be (just like it was stated in the article) that women and men would be the exact same thing.

Thus there is nothing to destinguish these sexes, other than "I can fuck this person". Conisdering that today, as everyone can see, sexuality today is a big thing, especially in women. This is because that originally, females were considered to be "mothers", "nurturers". Now they are considered as, basically, men...

SO if women are just men, what is the difference between these people other than their sexual organs? Nothing! The difference is our sexual organs! Women can be lawyers, judges, politicains, anything, and through out time, these have typically be male oriented jobs!! And preety much this feminist movement has reached it's peak, and women can only show their feminine side through their bodies, thus through their clothes.

More or less what I'm trying to say is that The Feminist Movement has evolved. Rather than equal rights, etc. (which obviously in certain parts of the world has been achieved)it is to now distingusihing themselves thorugh their sexuality, periode.

So with that said, wether or not it's true, I feel that Christina a modern feminist.
