GOOD LUCK...
If you have an amp, 500 might be doable for some passives.. Check on ebay especially.. I was able to score some tannoy reveal passives for less than 300 for the pair on ebay.. Those are a good value for the money.. But nearfield monitors normally = not too much deep bass... So keep that in mind..
My friend got those little black fostex actives for 500 but it was a deal through someone I think they are normally more like 750$... They are pretty good though.
Make sure you have a second system to check your mixes on also.. I have some crappy labtec surround speakers with a subwoofer and it's good for "crap-system" testing my music... |

| yeah, like scott said, i bought a pair fostex PM0.5 for a little over 500$. maybe 550$.
they're pretty tight sounding. come by sometime, we'll work on a tune and you can check out the monitors-

| active monitors for under $500 new is not possible. Try for some used tannoys or yorkvilles at that price. Otherwise, its going to cost you about $400 each minimum |

| it's ussually easier than finding an amp that pairs well with the particular brand you are using... Also it's ussually a bit cheaper in total than buying a high quality amp and passives... |
