| The blackout affected a quater of the states and all of ontario... yet quebec was untouched. Coincidence? I think not!!
kiddin. :) |

| Its because we know how to do things right.
The cascading effect should not of happened because there should've been threshold measures for smaller power plants. Such meausures would've allowed smaller power plants to output extra power to compensate for a missing node on the grid no matter how big.
This was the success of the ice storm. Cables from the dams themselves were destroyed. Substations were cut off, the grid was in chaos. Yet, it could've been twice as bad. 100% of quebec could've lost power, and probally vermont too. But that wasn't the case. Heck, not even 100% of montreal went dark.
We have a very stable grid believe or not. It took millions of tonnes of ice to damage it, and even then, it couldn't stop it completely.
In ontario/northeastern seaboard: one power plant dies, the largest cities in north america die with it. |

| Yup, that's exactly what they were saying on the radio.
Certain small areas here did not lose power because they were on the Gatineau power grid. |

| Its funny - last night, Chretien did a press release, and stated that it was a problem on the NY side of Niagra Falls - that something had failed.
Then, an hour later, you see several US Governors, Mayors, and then, the president, stating that it was Canada's (Quebec mainly) fault.
blameblameblame. |
|
Coolness: 149010
| what? you expect the US to take blame for somehting? pft |
|
Coolness: 339860
| hehe, we're gonna start a war over it. |
|
Coolness: 138915
| no, THEY will. |
|
Coolness: 40310
| I saw that too.
Every Canada news station this morning was saying the failure originated in NY, while every American channel were saying it was a problem in canada.
It's disgusting that SOMEONE has to be blamed, and that someone isn't themselves, both canada and the states. |

| i find it pretty funny that 21 powerplants just shut down in less then 3 minutes.. |

| I think if you were in charge of a multi million dollar power plant you would shut it down befor the surge hit you too. |
|
Coolness: 339860
| uhh, no one said anything about a power surge.. |
|
Coolness: 40310
| They still don't know the cause.
But it's most likely human error. |
|
Coolness: 66710
| it really was a power surge that shut everything down.
as nodes on the grid dropped, other power plants suddenly and without warning had to compenstate.
It cascaded throughout a shared power grid. |
