There's just not enough to get me really turned-on, but that's personal taste (based on personal experiences, no doubt). Distortion can be controlled, it's uses and effects very varried. Distortion does not equal noise. The clarity and obviousness of certain notes and sounds can be more easily attained by using distortion, certain frequencies come through better when you juice 'em up. Sometimes it gets in the way, and you have to tone it down, since distortion is about saturation. But yeah, the world is fucked up, people are angry/upset/revolted (for good reason). Since distortion can create harsh sounds, reflecting a harsh society, alot of rebellious/mad styles of music use and abuse it. And it works. Music as an art is also about exploration, therefore all sounds/frequencies are necessarily touched upon and used. The extremes in both music and emotions are necessary. If you think that anything distorted is automatically aggressive, then you need to open you ears to more types of sounds, and explore that rich world of sonic possibilites ... but of course, if you don't feel the hard stuff 'cause you think it's just for anger or sadness, then whatever, listen to what keeps you happy - not my problem! |
