OK, so remember last month, I asked everyone if the specs on the iMac I wanted to buy were good enough. The answer was Yes, but that I was crazy for paying that much. so whatever I do what I want with my money.

But your comments did affect me, and I do still occasionally find myself requiring a PC to do certain tedious things (like convince a SATA6G hard drive to revert to 3G specs).
I'm now considering buying a regular, not ultra powerful, but still decent PC to fuck around with. Problem for me is that I am used to like 6 choices with few customizations, I wouldn't know where to begin about buying a PC.

I guess I don't mind building it, so long as I don't have to soldier anything, and of course I'd like something that I could use to swap pieces in and out of whenever, maybe with the exception of the motherboard and CPU.

So.... where do I start?

If you build a PC you do not need to solder anything and you can always change the cpu and motherboard.

since you use macs I'd suggest building something you could dual boot OSX and windows on, you will get a lot more value for your money that way.

I'd definitely go for a sandy bridge i3 or i5 if you are on a budget.

People who say you are crazy for spending a lot of money on a computer are probably people who have no money.
Honestly though I think a 27 inch imac is OVERKILL unless you are doing video editing or major design work and need to use the mac platform.

I won't need to Dual Boot because I already have three macs, one being more powerful than God himself...

and I am doing heavy video editing and convertion (I took it upon myself to digitize 20+ years of family video for my parents)

thanx for the resources!

If you are doing video conversion I hope you have those 3 networked with gigabit and are using compressor + nodes.. it will be a lot faster

well, they are all connected to a gigabit switch but only one of them is really powerful enough to do any real work... I'm not at the point of requiring nodes

I loves me some [ Newegg.ca ] :-D I only ever buy my parts when they're on sale + free shipping. Then I just go pick'em up at Purolator.

I found good deals on Tiget Direct too... They have a few build it yourself kits with everything included that can sometimes be pretty sweet if your not overly obsessed with performance and want something your sure will work.

Just do a little research, make sure your cpu matches the motherboard socket type, and that your ram is compatible... Really just check to make sure that your motherboard has the right connectors for your components.

Answer: Check [ Newegg.ca ] for bundle packages...
NCIX is also a great site, and maybe try TigerDirect as a 3rd option... (they have great bundle prices, but usually on systems that will be obsolete with newer technology in the not so distant future)

Question: I'm looking to buy a laptop soon. From what I gather, places like Futureshop, and Bureau en gros have some of the best prices, on cheaper/smaller systems. Anyone have any other suggestions tho? Or have, or know anyone, that might be selling one that's in great shape? (just to be used solely for running a program like traktor pro, or ableton, FL studio etc). doesn't need wifi, 6 gigs of ram, 2tb drive, or any other bells and whistles. just a sturdy case, decent brand components etc... even battery life is not an issue, since I would have it plugged in 85% of the time.

soldering ? in a pc ? what are you browsing with an amiga 500 ???

its been ages you cant solder shit in there without affecting times (or getting affected from) , due to clock delays caused by using wires on a motherboard mod.
