lol, i feel like im on a role here. im not picking on anyone when i say this, but further more: old school hardcore / rave IS proto-jungle. your clue is the "Amen".

... speaking of which, ive not heard very much dubstep tracks with an Amen on it (please enlighten me if ive over looked something?)

the dubstep connection with jungle comes about because of danse hall and the fact that in both places where the sounds where pioneered (jungle & dubstep), you will find a significant jamaican comunity.

The only thing that makes dubstep "D&B's retarded little brother" is this progressive migration towards mid range sensibilities. in both cases, mid range makes you more and more retarded.

personally, i would ban all reeces if i could.

cool tune rawali!

zomby does some great stuff too... its the first "dubstep" i can think of that uses an amen (the album is worrth checking out, if you're into nostalgia). here's a link:

... im not sure what the bpm is, but i dig it.

like i said before, im not trying single anyone out, or point the angel finger, or take sides... other then my own of course and thats why i started off in the first place.

im just trying to make sure what i know is reasonably accurate is all ^^

anyway, all this to ask: isnt rusko from northern parts of england? im never really been a fan of hhc, so im probably talking out my ass... somewhere along the way i got this idea that hhc originated from the northern parts of england?. for the sake of knowing about different music, i am curious to know where that hhc sound originated?

I'm not sure either, cuz I wasn't there, and I'm not a fan of HHC. though I am pretty sure it got really popular later on in Northern England and Scotland. as far as I know, the evolution went something like this

88-92 - a mix of acid house, hardcore, breakbeat hardcore - all collectively known as rave music

then in 92, in reaction to the cheddar piano hardcore that was predominating at the raves, some producers like 4Hero started making really dark tracks - to try and get rid of the bandwagon jumpers and their fluffy music. it was called darkcore or darkside hardcore, and a bit later they started calling these styles jungle, jungle techno, darkside jungle

for a while it was all mixed in together and people weren't sure where it was gonna go - it was still lumped together as hardcore techno. I have EPs where one side will be happy jungle with pianos and chipmunks, and the other side might be pure dark jungle with dub basslines and ragga samples or gabber sounding stuff with breakbeats

but then by 93/94 the scene split. the hardcore jungle vibe was dark and fast and was more for the inncer city people in London, Manchester etc, with a lot more black people running the scene

the piano hardcore ravers kept doing their thing, and it became progressively faster and more cheddar, and finally lost the jungley breakbeats. this was music much more for suburban white kids. So it definitely comes from the same roots as hardcore jungle - but maybe it later became more popular in the North. i really don't know.

but I do really like some of the happy jungle/hardcore from 93/94 before it had completely split.

stuff like this...

Shut up and dance were UK BREAKBEAT also known as hardcore at the time

At that time jungle didn't exist, only later did it evolve out of breakbeat

It really annoys me when people classify breakbeat as jungle or drum n bass as if breakbeat evolved out of dnb when in fact its totally the other way round

ya dude it's great! I don't have that track but I have a lot of similar stuff from that era. back then they used to mix the uplifting tracks like that one in with really dark tracks all in one set. that's how I like it. too much of one vibe in a set gets tired

this is another pianoey hardcore jungle track from 92/93 that I play. might be cheesy to some but I think it's damn good. was huge when it came out

well I find there is a lot of misconceptions about where breakbeat -> jungle/D&B came from. some people get their knowledge from wack sources... best way to be educated on music is to talk to serious DJs who were actually there spinning the music as it progressed.

but ya, Shut Up and Dance are one of the originals. just like 4hero / Reinforced crew and Ibiza crew, they fused house, techno, breakbeats, soul, dub basslines and (sometimes) reggae samples and created the blueprint for what would later be called jungle...

like this masterpiece here ->

S.U.A.D. have done all kinds of stuff since then, under various names - ragga-jungle, breaks, UK Garage. sick sick producers.

for the pioneers though, I prefer 4 Hero. I think out of anyone they deserve the most credit for shaping the music from UK hip house/rave into dark hardcore jungle. they discovered Goldie in 92.. took him under their wing and engineered / co-produced his early Rufige Kru tracks. 4 Hero are geniuses.
