I'm all for supporting artists but:
Unless you've never in your life downloaded an mp3/wav/ogg/mp2/mov/wma/wmv "illegaly", who are you to tell anyone else not to do it?

No one and I mean no one should be making mad cash for anything, ever. Mad money makers are directly responsible for the poverty in the world.

Besides, money doesn't make you happy, hopefully making and sharing music with people you love will, and charging them for that pleasure is just as evil as stealing music. Furthermore, most labels pay artist pennies on 20$ CDs, that's a nice big FAIL right there.
Seriously though, the reality of internet based music sharing isn't a new phenomenon, if you release a worthwhile album, it will be pirated, getting mad about it is pretty immature imo. It's like, how did he not see this coming?

And if you can't tour, well you obviously don't have enough of a following to support that and that's nobody's fault but you're own for not being mainstream or 'good' enough.
Brian Eno and Boards of Canada aren't the type of groups you'd expect to make a living from their music, it's way too weird (good, but common, weird).
Besides, with globalization and the ease with which it is to record a decent album and distribute it, it only makes sense that the price of music has fallen to virtually 0.
This is about passion, creativity and the love of music. None of those things should be dependent on money.
I'm feeling good in the hood right now..

but when you put so much effort in creating a masterpiece and you only sell a few copies, it still sucks.
I'm feeling home, sweet home right now..

Mm...I think this is also a very interesting point of view AlienZed. I've heard it discussed before, and I agree to a certain extent, that music never used to be something we put people onto golden pedestals for, and it's a strange thing that it has happened in recent decades. So yeah, maybe the world where Led Zeppelin flies around in private jets is a thing of the past and it should stay that way.

But let me be clear... when I say 'mad cash' I'm more referring to the kind of funds required to sustain a record label and pay/record/perform with multiple highly trained musicians...not so much the kind of 'mad cash' used to buy Twisted Records a new yacht. The point is this isn't a matter of Twisted adding another swimming pool to their multi-million dollar studio, it's a matter of the company living or going under. It's sad that one of the grand-daddy labels of psychedelic trance might fold because people aren't willing to pay a small sum for an album.

Maybe making obscene amounts of money (let's say...100k+ a year) from music isn't really justifiable. But what about making a living? Enough money to buy bread and cheese? I don't think that is too much to expect from dedicating your life to professional musicianship.

There is sometimes a self-reinforcing culture on the interwebs where people tell each other that it's perfectly good and just that they download all the music they want at absolutely no cost and never give anything in return for it. But it's rare to see artists who actually want to make a living off of said music participating in such conversations. It's important to see the other side of the coin, y'know? I felt it was a good time to bring this up as Simon and Raja Ram are quite high profile artists in the scene, and hopefully this whole thing will have some ripples out through the collective discussion and spark similar discussions like this one.

As for whether or not I have the right to tell people not to download music...
I personally have downloaded lots of music from Soulseek and will continue to do so on occasion, but I've also spent 1000's of dollars on vinyl records and continue to purchase music off of beatport on a regular basis. I think it's important to give back to artists if you can, and I act accordingly. I'm not telling people they absolutely cannot download music. Fuck, it's a free world, do what you like. But I definitely want to encourage people to support the artists that they want to see keep making music.
I'm feeling focused right now..

We are talking about a leaked album here you know... private material that illegaly went public... it kinda goes beyond the idea of downloading an album and buying it if you like it for example

digital labels will give you a bigger percentage... You can easily make 30, 40% through web releases... and if you distribute them yourself, then you get more

Like I said earlier, creative exchange between "weird" music and dancefloor music is a basis of evolution in sound

it might be cheap to create music, all in-the-box. But what if music could pay your rent... not the rent for a spacious loft on the plateau... your rent for a modest 3 and a half in hochelaga... wouldn't it be nice to have enough money to go around so you can make music your full time job... now... if music was your full time job and you could stay at home and work on your shit 40 hours a week... don't you think you'd be banging out some pretty fucking dope tunes? wouldn't the quality and creativity of music go way up?

Seriously, this is a fucking dream of mine, having enough money to get fed and pay the rent so I can concentrate on making music... not buying 17 hummers and a yacht... just, making music
I'm feeling lovely right now..

Just because I have the music now doesn't mean I'm not going to buy the album. :P

I know that this type of music isn't super popular and that the artists need money for it. I'm quite diligent about buying CDs, especially psy or chill artists, because I know that if I don't support these artists this type of music (which I love) will disappear.

:)
I'm feeling excited for psymind right now..

I'm actually surprised that the label is broke. There's some big artists on Twisted.

if the label is broke, it's because they spent all their money on Moroccan hashish last tour...
not to mention that last I heard, Simon Posford lived in a sick villa in south america.... not exactly starving to death :P

but all in all I do suggest anyone who likes it buys the album, it's worth it for sure

The album is definitely awesome!

Anyways I think that internet distribution and lower production costs attributed to digital technology makes it that records cost a lot less to record, master, and distribute.

There's a plus and a minus to everything...
I'm feeling wtf charles? right now..
