i'm not a fan of fsol in general, though... i prefer their influence to their actual music ;)

well tbh it's the only tune of theirs that I know by name. they were before my time - until 93 I was strictly into hip hop and old & new rock... but I do love that tune. it's epic

when you say you prefer their influence... you mean you prefer the reworking of their music, or the music that influenced them? just wasn't sure

No no no...I think you guys are missing what is happening here.

All the examples you guys have showed so far either fade out to an ambient breakdown or actually slow down the track.

What is happening in Vandal is a shift to a new tempo without dropping the beat. This is novel. Theoretically using this technique you could have tracks which straddle the line between 140 and 180 in the same way that tracks straddle 70/140 in dubstep and 90/180 in drum and bass.

sorry, actually i meant that i prefer the influence they left on the music :) like i don't really like what they produced, but i like how they inspired lots of people and how you can find their influence in more recent music.

ya man I hear ya. after I re-read I understood what you meant.

sometimes things sound better re-worked. I've gone out and bought rare old funk and soul records that were sampled for hip hop tracks... but honestly sometimes the hip hop producer has done such a good job at re-working the samples that it sounds way better to me than the original.

still though, I gotta give em props for being the original people to pick up instruments and actually compose it

Ah...you are indeed correct my good man. Sweet.

And actually it uses a different method of switching up the tempo that I hadn't thought of before. It moves into 8th notes with a length of 3/16ths, whereas the Vandal track moves into triplet 16ths and uses them as regular 8th notes.

So using those two techniques you could theoretically shift into a tempo that is 2/3rds or 3/4ths the speed of your starting tempo...and you could probably move up in similar ratios.
