At this crucial time in South African history, Hamish knew the stigma attached with loving what the local whites called "kaffirs" and he decided to disguise Wendall by painting his face white and having him learn to play country guitar. During this time Wendall was introduced to the stiff realities of being reared by this firm believer in equal rights and brotherly love.
