do flyers have any meaning any more? I think most people find out about parties from the net.. I throw out 100% of flyers I get.
I'm feeling gangsta right now..

yeah, it was my understanding that handing a flyer to someone these days is the equivalent to saying "Hey, can you throw this out for me?"

DJ InYourFace's smartass-know-it-all guide to cheap promoting, v.1.0

Facebook is probably your best tool, [ rave.ca ] your close second. Myspace isn't useful anymore. Also, don't bother with the Montrealshows forum unless Megasoid is somehow involved in your night.

Get your shit listed in all free newspapers in town (it's free), then email columnists about your night and maybe they'll mention you. Contact college radio people, or even try Rajotte at Radio-Canada (one of the nicest guys ever), ask for a mention, send them a CDR, etc.

Flyers can be cheap, cheap, cheap. Black and white, get the info out. I used to fit 4 flyers on a standard size page of thin cardboard. I'd make around 400-500 flyers for always under 50$. Learn to use Photoshop, use white margins creatively and incorporate them to the design.

FACT: Ghislain Poirier's first Bounce Le Gros flyers were printed on single sided WHITE PAPER for Christ's sake. Equation: the hotter your party is, the shittier your flyer can be. (So if you do a psy-trance party, by all means make a giant, foldout, 3d-lettered monstrosity of a flyer, you'll need it. Diss!).

Next, numbers. If you think about it, do you need 6000 flyers? Instead of leaving say, a stack of 300 at a party, leave 30 at different spots in the building; stick em everywhere: bathroom (do boy's, then ask a girl), bar, pool table, where people put their bags, near the dj booth, etc. You wouldn't believe the number of flyers that ultimately get thrown out (95% is my informed guess). Let's face it, the scene is so small that word of mouth will do the rest.

The only situation where I'd say "you should make 6000 color flyers", is if it will last you over 6 months (say, listing a whole trimester's worth of gigs on the same flyer).

If you get a big headliner, you still probably don't need a nice flyer (unless you want to flatter your ego, or have a memento for when you're 35). Think about who will come to your night. 80% are the [ rave.ca ] people who don't care about how nice the flyer looks, 10% are the friends they dragged with them, 5% are the DJs waiting to play and their friends, and the remaining 5% are outsiders (if you're lucky). These are some of the many reasons why flyers are quickly becoming irrelevant in Montreal in this post-Facebook age.

But, say you still print some. Flyer schools, clothing stores, lampposts near important streets, 99cent pizza joints where drunk people go, the outside of Metro stations, record stores, pot-related stores, etc. If you're lucky, you'll get a few of the aforementioned outsiders by doing this.

As for posters, make a dozen or two. 10 for the various indie record shops around town, 1-2 for the place you'll play at, then the rest wherever you feel is necessary. Some places like La Belle Province don't care what you stick in their window, just ask first.

Finally, you don't need to advertise way in advance, as people decide at the last minute if they'll go to your party (it depends if they spent the last of their money on their favorite addictive substance or not that week).

Follow each of these steps and you'll become a millionnaire like me (I'm typing this from my yacht).
I'm feeling my balls for a tumor right now..

Here a price range form a company in montreal. (They are a bit too expensive if u ask me)

standard formats aren't really any cheaper at all...
most printers charge by the square inch.
it's usually around $9-$11 per inch per 6000.
some printers will do half runs of 3000 which is convienent because its less wastefull but tends to be more costly if you break it down by unit.

i dont know of any paper mill that makes recycled hemp paper for the press

but there is a couple of types of paper (enviro 100 for example) that are made from 100% of post consumer recycled fiber... BUT since you cant choose your paper when you print in a combo (multiple documents on the same press sheet) this will damage you an easy minimum of 600$ for 3000... but then again you could get any quantity you want, you could do it two colours (like a nice rich black and blue) instead of four to save on plates... or if you wanna invest more, you can get waterbased varnishes, uv varnishes, spot varnishes, embossing, die cuts, metallic inks (then again these are particularly environmentally unfriendly) basically have much more control on your production... but it'd cost you!

depends how big a run... you have to check with the printers for it...

uv varnish is niiiiiiiiice... just so you know though, its not called uv varnish cuz it interacts with uv or blacklights... its a type of varnish thats super fucking glossy and necessitates a special uv light to dry
