BEIJING (Reuters) - A pretty girl who shot to fame at China's Olympic opening ceremony was a photogenic front for the real singer, who was rejected appearance-wise in the "national interest", Chinese media reported on Tuesday.

Nine-year-old Lin Miaoke has been celebrated across China as the angelic voice with the cute face who sang "Ode to the Motherland" at Friday's opening extravaganza.

But a director of the opening ceremony, Chen Qigang, told state television Lin's voice was overdubbed by the singing of the real child singer Yang Peiyi, said the government-run China News Service.

"Yang Peiyi missed out on selection (to appear at the ceremony) because of her external appearance. It was for the national interest," Chen was quoted as saying.

China has gone to extraordinary lengths and expense to ensure a picture perfect Games.

An official disclosed on Wednesday that some of the scenes of fireworks broadcast at the opening were pre-recorded.

Among sections pre-recorded were parts of a stunning series of firework "footprints" across Beijing that led to the Bird's Nest stadium where the four-hour spectacular was staged, Games Executive Vice President Wang Wei told reporters.

But getting one child to appear as the face of another was a step too far, some Chinese said in comments posted on the Internet.

"Why worry so much about appearances? All seven-year-olds are angels," said one.

I thought something was up.

Regardless, I've been impressed with the Olympics thus far --with the exception of Canada's performance. I tip my hat to China. This is a huge moment for this country's history, and with politics aside, the People of the Republic should be proud oh themselves.

Aside from that, the pyrotechnic "footsteps" that were lead towards the Olympic Stadium, that was televised during the opening ceremonies, were also added digitally implemented.

BUSTED.

Still, again, with politics aside, I'm happy knowing that I've witnessed a moment, that was made in history, from my living room.

the olympic commitee has sor of quietly agreed amongst itself that they are never going to do something like this with the olympics again, picking a place based on the hope that this will change the nations behavior...
I'm feeling surly right now..

yet the 2014 winter games are in Sochi Russia.

Fuck it, its about games, not politics.
Beijing has put on a good show...lets not mix up human rights with games.
If the IOC really worried about human rights and not the spirit of the games, than any county with shoddy human rights issues shouldn't be invited to participate. That'd be one helluva boring games with only western democracies participating

well, originally, the olympic were made so country would compete with eachother in a peaceful way, any country that was at war in this time couldnt participate ( back in antic greece )

but now theres too much money involved.

Russia and Georgia wouldnt be able to compete, if the true spirit of the olympic games was still alive

You're right, the show must go on.

What on earth could be more important than a medal?

way to have an intelligent discussion wanker.
So of the over 200 + countries that actually are competing, lets look and see which ones are actual angelic societies.

There would be a plethora of countries not represented if you had it your way.

NO it is not the medal that is important, but hmmm making it an actual world competition, and being best in your discipline is

How about you discuss instead of throwing out you I am right you are wrong bullshit attitude

how about the "spirit" of the games themselves?

if this were all about politics, china should never had the chance for a nomination to begin with.
and since they did, well... your beef should be with IOC.
and if we're going to get all fussy about polictis, I can't imagine any country being eligible for a nomition, for that matter.

so fuck all the athletes and their hopes, because the games were never about them to begin with.
right?
