WOW.. i am 100% convinced that you have no idea, whatsoever, of what you are talking about.. promotors who have rich parents ?? and who use there rich parents money to throw disorganised parties ?? man, i am confused.. the same goes with your example of Djs'... please, explain what a wannabe Dj is.. how he acts differently and what are the major differences from a regular dj and a wannabe Dj.. please.. |

| Coolness: 159110 | Ok well, I didn't mean to LITERALLY replace DJ with promoter but to consider the same situation. Last I checked, rich promoters at least have the means to get a decent setup, venue, etc...
As for wannabe DJs, I'm talking about all those guys I remember who started raving and barely at week 5, decided to become a DJ because it's the cool thing to do. By the end of week 6, after bothering surgeon daddy for a good 15 minutes, had 3 black SL1200 MK2 tables, a DJM600 mixer and an ass-flooring sound system without even having touched turntables before. By week 10 they claimed they were ready for a world tour and tried to get booked at every party in town. And they would because either A) they were promoters and would book themselves as headliners for ALL their parties or B) they would lend money to promoters to throw parties hence they'd have to be on the lineup. Massive trainwrecking ensues. Btw, there is a difference between a WANNABE DJ and a BEDROOM DJ. I fully acknowledge bedroom DJs can be skilled enough to learn the tricks of the trade rather rapidly but on decks, they KNOW what the fuck these sliders and knobs do. And they generally KNOW they are trainwrecking and try to correct the issue as opposed to a wannabe DJ who is convinced he's awesome and creating a masterpiece while everyone on the dancefloor is giving him a puzzled look. |

ok outside percpective from what was read on the board here : Dj Wood... never heard him play, he might be good, but that is not what I heard either... :S He honnestly said that all his equipment where a gift from his parents... that's why I put what V2-1 said and the situation togheter... but I could be wrong.... A wannabe dj dosen't really care about performance, mixing and all the rest (i.e. work), They just do it for fun, to have a laugh, if they suck (which they generally do), they tell you too "relax" and that they're not "real" djs. They usually play a badly mixed setlist of songs they've heard a lot at parties cause they "don't have the time" to find their own music On the other hand a professional dj will know how to mix, how to program the music, read the crowd, know whats hot and whats played out. He'll bring experience, skill and knowledge which dosen't come overnight but through a lot of hard work. At the end of the day the wannabe dj is kindof like a bad cover band, with the professional being the real thing |

Bliss : i don't really agree with your definition at all, as i am sure that many good dj's don't think of mixing as "work" and play for the fun of it or because the music drives them !! my only problem with this thread is that there are too many generalisations and judgements made.. every case is different.. i don't like bad Dj's.. they can be rich, poor, real, wannabee's... whatever. they don't belong on stage !! i don't believe that all bad dj's are wannabee's.. I think you are confusing "experiance" with "professional" in your comparisons Bliss !! :) |

| Coolness: 159110 | Yeah, the last thing you wanna do is hide stuff from the venue owner. When the cops come-a-knocking at your door, one of the things they'll look for is the owner of the place. If you're straight up with the owner, he/she'll usually cover your ass.
If you bullshit the owner, he/she'll eventually find out anyway, and he/she'll be pissed. When that happens and the cops show up, the owner is a lot less inclined to help you if you lied to them. |
