in the world of record sales and popular djs, im a fucking nobody, like bliss said in another thread..."if i left the country and asked somebody if they ever heard of you, would they say yes?" of course not...

maybe another angle to look at it is.....if somebody books me at sum popular gig, a good club night or wtv, and i drop 10 tunes that kill the place, and nobody has ever heard them before, and i dont get booked anywhere for another 2 months. And lets just say the dj that booked me for that night goes out and gets those same tunes and totally plays them out....

who gets the cred?

"sniff coke off my dick" is a funny track, in my experience, made people laugh, and gave a distinct impression on people about my personality, and whatnot...
It sure as hell aint gonna be special if every other dj played it. i made it for me to play, and me only... it brings something to my mix that is EXCLUSIVE that you cannot hear from every other "popular" tom dick and harry.

if i buy a track and love it to bits, and am soo excited to drop it when i play, but 10 other djs have been playing it out for the past 2 weeks, well, i just wont play it.... whats the point

enough people step on your feet, you end up buying steel toe boots.
too many djs think they're good when theyre not, you do wtv it takes to prove you're better...

p.s. my spring bling mix is NOT the best example of my words, but thats besides the point ;p
I'm feeling your nuts right now..

Hummmmm I don't remember ever saying that but regardless,

However I'd assume that people interested in the Montreal music scene have heard of you,

You could easily travel to another city and play, you got the sick dj and production skills, it would be a breeze.

Its not something I'm particularily interested in myself since I already travelled and played abroad a lot when I was younger, plus thanks to the 2 wars mix I already got my name got diffused all over,

But seriously man, I'm sure you could get tons of booking, easily

And in terms of peeps playing the same shit, my advice is diversify a little. For example if you know all the djs are going to be playing nu skool breaks (which is often the case) Bust out some other styles of breaks you know are gonna rock the crowd and those guys don't have, pack a few of those older classics everyones forgotten and always bring a track or two of totally unexpected shit and trust me you'll standout.

My 2 cents

it wasnt towards me, (it was in a previous thread) and that wasnt a direct quote from you either, but it had something to the same effect...

Anyways...

as far as playing something other than nu skool breaks, your talking to the right guy...
even when playing electro amongst the people i was performing for was considered "gay", i used to bust out party jams, some stuff that i digged for, for hours and hours, that i cant even find for sale online today...

wtv, its kind of off topic, im just trying to say, if you want to beat the first Legend of Zelda game on Nintendo, half the fun is finding all the secrets on your own. Whats the use in letting someone else play it for weeks and weeks, just to have them tell you all the secrets after they already beat it, so you can beat it more easily, and pretend it was you who beat it in the first place...

what does this have to do with giving, or, not giving a tracklisting to a new mix you want people to hear?

EVERYTHING!

imagine going to a gig, and the guy before you played half your record bag in the 1st hour of the night.

not because he stumbled across these tracks after hours and hours of "work" digging, but rather because his friends told him about whats "hot", and from choosing his favorite jams from tracklistings of previous online mixes...

im just trying to debate here, maybe im bitter upon the whole "who you know, rather than what you know" phenomena, but regardless.

if in any way possible, i can find a way to stay unique in a good way, against my "opposition" than so be it.

of course i have another 10 pages worth to write, but usually when sumone writes this much in one post, i skip over it anyways.

haha

im going to bed!

please keep this "debate/argument" going. i'd love to hear peoples opinions on the matter!

peace.

I hear you when you're saying that it sucks when another DJ plays all your stuff, especially when he plays right before you. I guess it all comes down to a matter of respect between the DJs. I understand why you don't want to share your tracks and it is a valid reason when we read your explanation, but I still think it has two very bad side-effects. First, as I said it before, you keep all the credit for other people's work by not giving the name of the tracks you play. It's like putting a quote in a text, but without the name of the author or the book it's coming from. The second bad side-effect is that it means that you see other DJs as competition. I think that this is even worse.

I think that if you see other DJs as "competition", then it's no surprise that a DJ playing before you will want to "burn" all your big tracks. There is probably a lot more to be gained at collaborating with other DJs and sharing than there is to be lost by seeing another DJ play a track that you found. I personnaly think that there's more than enough room for people with talent out there that we don't need to put ourselves in each other's way. Having the scene as a big competition between DJs is certainly not a way to keep it healthy and going and certainly not a way of bringing better music to everyone.

It happened to me quite a few times that I was playing before or after a DJ that plays tracks that I have and we would discuss beforehand who got to play which tracks to make sure we both played the ones we prefered and that the first DJ did not burn all the bombs. That was only possible because of the respect we paid each other. If we had seen each other as competition, then we simply wouldn't have discussed it and the first DJ would have burned all the bombs to piss the 2nd DJ off. Then it would have been more about ego than about sharing music and programming a banging night for everyone.
I'm feeling yay right now..

Djs don't burn other djs tracks because they want to piss them off,

They're just lazy ;)

It's more because they either payed for the music or had it handed to them by the producers themselves,
while ppl just listen on in complete and utter jealousy. No laziness, just make your own tunes or make
friends with some producers. It's that simple, you don't have permission to give the tune out? Too bad.

produce, thats all, there is nothing wonderful in being a "dj"

anybody can find the tracks a dj plays, even if rare.

but no one can play a track you made yourself.

I love it when people express opinions like this, shows how little they know about the art of dj'ing in general... pft, I dont know about using the word "wonderful" guy, but a good dj takes a long time and a lot of practice and deadication to mold; not to mention that anybody cannot just find whatever tracks, even if they are rare cause newsflash, sometimes rare means hardly any pressed copies, may never see the light of the interweb, kinda rare...

I completely agree that producing is key in todays electronic music market, but the art of dj'ing will never die and to those that think its easy or a joke, or not "wonderful", get a clue or stay ignant, your choice, your rep...

and on topic : as far as I am concerned, its dialects mix, if he doesnt want to share his tracklist, thats his decision, he has the right... I dont see anything wrong, if a dj or producer or complete muzik addict messaged him and asked what track was playing at the 36min mark, im pretty sure he would share the title...
