Similar articles (or books!) are usually generalizations, or exaggerations of what people do; the sentence you quoted was completely uncalled for (or a cheap attempt at humor, you pick), but examples of what is described there can still be seen all around us ! However, by not saying that we are competing in some way is kinda like saying that we've stepped out of evolution (however relevant that can be anymore). (Honestly, that article got me all up on my high horses at first, going "meh, this describes immature behavior", until I started reading the parts about insulting your significant other by insulting yourself. I think that when you realize that the concept of individuality means to be unique, it erases all need for competitiveness. You learn how to share what you are instead of pursuing the all mighty perfection related to your own self. It also eliminates a bunch of devious social behaviors. On the other hand, I get the feeling that most people definitely lack a general sense of empathy, which is probably what's making it a "every man for himself" world, relationship wise as well.

I don't take well to competition, in fact, I often stop trying when someone else starts. If the girl has to make a choice, it's up to her to make the choice and I'm not going to be manipulative about it and act better if it's only for the sake of making her THINK I'm better than I am. MY girl HAS to be smarter than that. Maybe I'll lose out and change my tactics though.
