MONTREAL (AFP) - Canadian authorities fanned out across Montreal, aiming to arrest 90 alleged Mafia gangsters, including the crime family's godfather, police said. Some 700 officers were taking part in "the most important police operations in the history of Canada," which targeted "traditional Italian organized crime," the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement. "We are talking about an organization that gains in the millions of dollars on a weekly basis in terms of their illegal activities," Raf Souccar, director general of the RCMP's organized crime unit, told public broadcaster CBC. "We've managed to ... dismantle the criminal organization, not simply get one or two players (off the street)," he said. "We were able to, over a long period of time, infiltrate them to dismantle this organization," he added. Already nabbed early Wednesday was a notorious crime family's 82-year-old patriarch, Nicolo Rizzuto, whose son Vito was extradited to the United States in August, accused of orchestrating a New York Mafia hit in 1981. "We're expecting to arrest 90 people this morning, and 90 searches are presently underway in the Montreal region," RCMP spokesman Corporal Luc Bessette told reporters. Seventy were in custody by noon, he said. Those arrested Wednesday will face more than 1,000 criminal charges, including drug importation, conspiracy to import, drug trafficking, conspiracy to traffic in drugs, gangsterism, bookmaking, extortion and attempted murder, police said. Their homes, bank accounts and other assets -- including about three million US dollars' worth of Canadian and US currency -- have been seized, they said. The group had purportedly infiltrated the Montreal International Airport, importing cocaine via the large transportation hub. Two customs officers and a dozen airline and food services employees were involved in the smuggling operation, police said. Another group linked to the alleged crime family also exported marijuana to the United States through the Akwesasne Indian reserve on the Canadian-US border, they said. Several Canadian government agencies conducted a two-year probe of the crime family ahead of the sting. |

If the news ppl didn't start babling about what was happening, police probably would've gotten better charges against them. This seems like a rush operation to cover up for the bad image they've been getting cause of those airport headlines + the fact that mafia got tighter with their biz. If they we're this deep, I'm sure they could've had a better case then what they probably have right now. |

If you're allowed to do what you do, without doing your homework so to speak then what does it say about the people who do do their homework, it devalues all the hard work they put in. whatever i don't think it's necessary to get all 'Huffy-Puffy' about it, just try to keep what i said above in mind and learn to be a little more humble, it's ok sometime to admit you don't know something or you're not sure about something |

Just because you choose to spend you life listening to lectures does mean that's the only way to get learned. p.s. I'm not getting all huffy about it, this is a 'discussion board'. If we wait till everyone has a Ph.D on a given subject posted on a RAVE message board.. no one would ever post. get over yourself, i post what i think you post what you think. calm down and quit the attacks. |

Professors try to enforce their views on you. When I was in Dawson, there was this HUGE influx of ultra left-wing liberal thinking that was thrusted upon me in most classes. When I was taking more scientific or business oriented classes (the ones where you learn real skills as opposed to just talk about world events) the thinking was much more center or right of center. In the end I just gave up on all of it and declared myself a crazy libertarian, since all the views have some really fucked up shit about them. For the record, I read a CRAZY amount of books and have had many discussions with others who have a first hand knowledge of world events and various religions. I do intense study on any subject I agree or disagree with. |

| Coolness: 92355 | I don't think Basdini was refering to knowledge itself so much as how it(or the lack of it) is expressed. As well as how doing so devalues the hard work of others. How convenient of you guys to fly right by the point of everything he was trying to say... and try to use it to express that you have this fountain of knowledge at your fingertips.. as if there were any knowledge to have in the first place, thereby suggesting that your 'knowledge' matters or exists when his entire point is that you are a little too sure of these things.
There's no such thing as someone who's educated in history that doesn't question. You can read as many books as you want but if you don't question or make efforts to check on things you're screwed. If you have the ability to read over a fact and trust it right away to the point where you will echo it back out to the world without any indication that it's debateable, there's no way that you're a good investigator. That's it, that's all.
