FRANKIE BONES

Frankie Bones knows a lot about this business. For one thing, he's been behind the counter at Manhattans legendary Sonic Groove record shop for more than 15 years, and he's been a master of the turntables for even longer. As one of the pioneers of acid house on the far side of the Atlantic, he's seen plenty of trends, novelties and fly-by-night DJ's come and go, but he's always stuck with the skills that took him into the field in the first place: An unrivalled ear for a crowd-pleasing tune and lightning quick hands that can mix almost any old vinyl into a seamless dancefloor experience. His seminal Bones Breaks releases have proved that he's no slouch in the studio either, and more outings such as The Saga EP on London's seminal techno imprint PRO-JEX shows that he still knows exactly what to do with a sledgehammer bassline or a tantalising breakdown.

But we all know that it's what a DJ does live which really proves his mettle - and Bones never disappoints. He's headlining at the consistently interesting headstart at Turnmills (now monthly) in an intriguing line-up that also features a hip-hop set from Camden tech-boy Billy Nasty. Turnmills eh? Every time you try to write them off, they come up with another unmissable night out.

Immediately recognizable and perhaps completely synonomous with words like 'techno' and 'DJ' is the name Frankie Bones; a name many heed as imperative to the global underground scenes' framework. Getting a head start in the early 80's as an underground house and freestyle DJ; the bred and born Brooklynist soon became a world renowned DJ-producer who would not only be the first to rock both sides of the atlantic; but would also be largely responsible for promoting the underground sound of cutting edge techno via tapes, parties... whatever means possible. In his greatest promotional move, Bones established a permanent outlet for DJs looking to find and purchase the very specific sound and records found within the techno genre. With this purpose in mind; the original Groove Records Avenue U Shop was founded. Over the years he would also establish the blueprint for DJ and rave culture as we know it with a stream of unforgettable events with the grin-invoking moniker Storm Rave. Now, just 10 years later -- with the store firmly entrenched on record row (Carmine St. Manhattan) Bones has again turned his attention to the music and consequently his production skills; developing and perfecting the sound of the street on labels like Sonic Groove and Ghetto Technics.

Frankie Bones has a style of DJing which is often imitated, but never duplicated. His intense mixing puts you on a roller coaster ride through an electrified atmosphere. From the first big drop, through loops of bass and twists of treble and then coasting into an ending smooth as steel. Frankie's formidable appearance behind the turntables has always been anticipated. Regardless of place or time, Frankie Bones has never failed to deliver a dynamic mix of hard-edged electronic music.

As a music maker, Frankie Bones occupies his own niche. His records cannot be given a once-over, tagged, then put on a shelf. The techno wave has grown....

"Frankie Bones is a living legend. A friend let me listen to one of Frankie's CD many years ago and my eyes were opened to the wonderful world of dance music. House Loop is still one of my favorites."

ahhh. this is what i was looking for... just for those that may not be aware, or perhaps think of bones only as a techno producer. or house producer. or whatever... but y'all should know bones is the one the truth the source and the light.. so read on

BREAKS HEADS MUST READ THIS :

History of Jungle / Drum & Bass - Unknown author 1998

Breakbeat was an underground music which had originally come in from the USA in the late 1970s. Frankie Bones, at his early DJ-ing stage had created breakbeat irregular music, whereby he had overlapped two same records on turn-table decks at slightly different speeds and slightly delayed. This would create asynchronous beat, which would drive the crowd crazy. His track named "Bones Breaks" was a pioneer if not discovererof breakbeat which has remained strictly underground since. In the late 80s, house scene erupted in UK, especially in London. As house scene had progressed, the ecstasy rave culture had emerged from the youth, suppressing the football hooliganism. House from one side and breakbeat from the other side had created a combination, which later led to production of what was called jungle and what is now called drum & bass. (from [ www.globaldarkness.com ]

The UK, its 1989, Arsenal had just been crowned League champions, but more importantly a new trend is taking over the youth culture – ‘Raves’ or ‘Acid House Parties’ were occurring in large fields in the middle of nowhere or in warehouses that someone had just broken into. From driving to the meeting point to following a car with its fog light on to dancing amongst thousands of ravers to the sounds of ‘Sueno latino’, Frankie Knuckles ‘Your Love’ and 808 States ‘Quadrastate EP’ to name but a few, and waiting for the sunrise, this whole new experience was about to change the attitude of the average youth from the street.

One of the early pioneers was Frankie Bones, along side his partners Lenny Dee & Tommy Musto. Some of their early productions were the first to incorporate breakbeats over House rhythms and was instantly recognised as having a more ‘rawer’ sound to what else was going on. With tracks like ‘Bones Breaks’ and ‘Just as long as I got you’ on the classic ‘Loony Tunes’ EP, it was clear to see which direction this new form of music was going to take us.

Those Bones breaks records are awesome...

I haven't played those since I was doing the Grill lol! Funny though I just dug one out yesterday and thinking how I hadn't played it awhile...

I'll bet you good money though that he won't be playing much in terms of breaks,

I'd categorize him more as a techno dj nowadays...

P.S. Nice booking Steve!!!
