This surprised experts on youth drug abuse, who feared that despite the film's realistic cold turkey scenes, youths might turn Christiane into a cult heroine and a role model. The book sold so well that she to this day is able to live off the royalties. She continued to struggle with drug addiction, however, on and off for many years. She has released a few records, and also lived in both the US and Greece before returning to Germany in 1993. In 1994 she enrolled in a methadone programme. Christiane still receives fan-mail and gets contacted by the German media from time to time, wanting to know how she is doing after all these years. As of 2007, Christiane lives in a small apartment in Berlin with her son, to whom she gave birth in 1996. |
