I'm used to digital perfection so I really notice any imperfections from the records and the player. Granted the equipment I'm using isn't in the greatest shape, and the records I am using are a bit varied (most of the records I own I found in the trash), but vinyl deffinately doesn't have perfect timing, you have to compensate a lot... |

 Coolness: 685790 | Well, drift is only an issue on old/bad-shape technics, or anything "budget".. The most rock-solid you can get are the ones with the higher torque motors like the Vestax PDX-2000 or the Stanton STR8-150.. Technics usually are the way to go, anything with less torque is going to flutter a lot more. |

| Coolness: 75870 | ScottyP - how old are the records - and what style are they... 'cause a lot of older stuff (pre-midi synch and click track) will have a certain amount of drift built into to begin with... as for dealing with tables that drift - you get an ear for it and you learn the proper touch. It can take a while to hone it down, but it's what seperates the wheat from the chaff.
The funny thing is, though.. that all this talk about technique really doesn't mean much at all - because most of what a technical DJ is doing will be lost on a crowd. Especially if they work in subtle ways... there are a lot of times when it seems that people who blow mixes and halfway wreck their way through a set get a good response because people can tell what they're doing (regardless of the fact that they're doing it poorly)... it makes folks feel like they're "in the know" |

your drifting problem could be combination of things... - old records before drum machines and digital corection were simply timed with a metronome and humans are not perfect and often drift a little bit during performance on older records... so it's not neccesarily your player it could just be the music you are playing. - you could need to have your pitch calibrated... check the l.e.d. lights in comparison with the dots on the plater (most decks have a little chart on them to help you with this. if your dots are drifting... so is your pitch... usually old decks have more drift in the middle and playing at a higher or lower pitch might be a little tighter if yer decks need to be calibrated. - it could also just be you sucking ass... so try this... after you bring in yer track on one side... switch you attention to the other side and make it perfect by adjusting the track your bringing out. then go take a piss and come back to see how spot on you actually are. anyway... let me know if that helps at all. and cutterhead... if you are so fuckin' smart and your knowledge is so fuckin' valuable why don't you try making it a little more coherent so us laymen can understand wtf your talking about. cuz as far as im concerned... for someone who claims to know so much about cutting records and turntables... you've contributed nothing to this thread. |
