| I was actually reading up on this and apparently the reason for the ridiculously simple command code is that the machine will DO NOTHING if not for a prior "OK" from higher-ups... and also physical command keys are needed. The reason the code is so simple is because should a nuclear crisis actually occur and Johnny Janitor is the last american alive, he can type in "00000000" to kill the commies. Even with the code printed above the machine (which it also apparently is) they don't want the guy fucking it up. It's so that untrained personnel can fulfill the final order without worrying about pressing the wrong thing and being locked out of the system. Outwardly retarded, but really.. not completely stupid. |
