I think you are mistaking UFC for WWF/WWE/WhateverTheFuck They're calling it these days, which is just a softcore gay porn soap opera.

Sure, all the "fighting" makes it macho and manly, up untill you realise that your just watching men in their underwear all greased up trying to pin each other down on the ground.

UFC was cool until they put all these rules.
For example, no hitting on the pressure point? wtf is that.
A shaolin monk can hit me so fast in some pressure point (solar plexus) before i can even blink. I'll be on the ground, grasping for breath.
The mixed martial sport favors the striker (i.e Muay Thai) and submission (i.e Jiujutsu) arts.

As for b-ball, i'm sure there's a market in the french demography who listen to hip hop who think they ghetto.
Also, B-ball is about star and spectacular moves so if they sign real good players it could work.
But it's all about NBA, people pay to see Lebron James, Steve Nash, Shaq, etc....

i'm not going to get into this tradiational martial arts versus contemporary favored arts in MMA

you still can't discredit that these guys are incredible athletes
maybe some of the best

there are tons of olympic wrestlers, judokas, RACKETBALL players, sprinters... that cross over to fighting in mixed martial arts

yes the early UFC were marketed as a bloodsport
they have totally changed their business plan
MMA as a whole has evolved so incredibly fast

it's only in the small shows that a random brawlers can get away with the punchers luck anymore

and actually montreal has a handfull of worldclass fighters

one note: there hasn't been a single sucessfull chinese fighter in any MMA event... not even brazillian vale tudo (that still exists today) where anything goes. even groin shots.

but Mico is right...

rednecks do make up a huge proportion of the MMA crowd
it's going to take a while before there's a trully educated audience

anybody wants to chat with me about this
i can go on forever

I actually know the guy who owns one of those Ultimate Fighting-thingys, here in Montreal.

I dont remeber exactly what it was called, though.
