Steve Lalla I've always liked booty. My earliest drunken experiences on smoky, half-remembered jaunts, with booty drifting in and out of my night, filled me with a curiosity that would be thoroughly explored in later years. Whether the booty originates in Detroit, Chicago or even the Deep South, you can't deny its raw, visceral appeal. With this weekend's Tribute to Booty event, Euphoric Taste give a serious nod to the rise of good booty in Montreal, working overtime to line up five hours of solid DJs, free-flowing alcohol and sultry ambience. I spoke to Euphoric Taste's Flashy Simon about the ins and outs of organizing such a large-scale, booty-oriented event. Hour What inspired you to plan a tribute to booty? Flashy Simon I don't exactly remember how it came to mind. Probably a mixture of repressed libido, a taste for bubble butts and hearing a really good booty house set by Phil Atio that I downloaded from the Internet. [Go to [ www.bowzer.net ] to find some live sets by Ottawa's Phil Atio.] Hour What is your role in Euphoric Taste? Simon I'm an event producer and promoter, and so is my partner Pascal. Strangely, we each have our own projects and never really co-operated equally on any event yet. We both started as rave promoters then joined forces with the intent of organizing a bigger rave - that never happened, and then we suddenly decided that raves were dead [Nietzsche decided that Become a member God is dead, Euphoric Taste decided that raves are dead] and that we hated amphetamines too much to be producing that kind of event. So now I'll be more into producing club nights or nightlife events, and Pascal seems to be more interested in live band shows. Hour What are your own experiences promoting and organizing events? Simon I'm quite new to this. I started with 8bits at Le Chill Montreal, having no contacts whatsoever and having no idea how to organize a party. They helped me develop some experience, and my parties had some success, so I wanted to do something a bit bigger. I was then approached by some people to co-operate with their events, and I did join them, but most of those projects were doomed before they even started, so I decided to do my own thing. Hour Do you feel that booty is underexposed in Montreal? Simon Pretty much. I can understand that this type of music isn't for everybody. Also, considering that the lyrics are in English, you lose a good part of the French crowd in Montreal. But still, I think booty house deserves more exposure, and if I get a good response from Tribute to Booty, more exposure for booty house is the plan. It's blatantly vulgar, arrogant, obscene, shocking and sexual, yet pretty funky. Those words can be used to describe what art should be. They can even be used to describe life. I bet that in Heaven, the angels play booty house all the time.
