i'm looking for a decently afforable pair (though i am willing to pay higher prices dependin) that will provide very clear sound, but are more home studio oriented...if there's such

The Yammy's and the KRK's are the most affordable. Dynaudio and Genelec are really good but pricey. Also PMC and ATC are good but even more BLING

gordo you need to be a bit specific... What are your speaker size needs / bass response needs?

Oliver got a pair of fostex active monitors (pm 0.5), and they are quite good for the price (500-750$ I think, he got a deal, I think they are 750$ retail)... They are deffinately "home studio" oriented, I think I get your drift... I was impressed by the bass response on them also for monitors with 5 inch woofers....

I use tannoy reveals passives with a hafler p1000 amp, they might not provide the kind of bass you want though... Yorkville apparently makes a good and affordable studio monitor as well...

Also if you haven't got a pro sound card already it would be time to get one...

Your spending limit would really help, monitor prices can go as high as the sky

I'd stay away from those cheap "mini monitors" though, most of those are junk...

Also try and demo any monitor you plan on buying, monitors can be as much a personal preference thing as anything, I like the reveals because the very high frequencies have a slight dip which makes it easier on my ears when I use them for long periods of time or at high volumes, other people might want the very hissy kind of high end response you get on some monitors

i remember trying to get those speakers to produce any sound other than a system beep without it causing horrible distortion..

after that i never wanted to see those speakers again.. they really are worthless, i mean they can't do anything.

Scott...i'm looking for a pair of speaks that will provide me with a clear sound, a nice deep bass, but not so much so that it's all you hear, i'm pretty picky about bass

my cash range is pretty much around $800
the Rokits i've seen before, they seem to be quite nice, but i really don't know

the music that would be played through them would be mostly hip-hop,downtempo, funk, jazz, bluesey stuff

if that helps

any recomendations?

you can have flat response and still have "good bass", but you need a bigger speaker, which means more money... Most 5-6inch woofer monitors (which is what your price range would get) don't have a whole lot of bass, probably less that you expect for a speaker that size... Almost always you hear enough to do proper mixing however...

Of course if you have a bassy system to check your material on, you can work well even with nearfield monitors which might lack the oomph you want. Once you get used to them you can mix on them then check it on the bassy system to see how it sounds compared to commercial material...

I'd suggest going to steves or another music store and tell them your budget and audition a bunch of monitors there with a CD you bring in... Be sure to include songs of the style you expect to be working with, as well as some of your own material, and see what suits your needs.. But perosnally as I said I believe the foxtex monitors provide a good value for the money, expecially since they are active (powered, don't need external amp)
