Fentanyl

this question is aimed at people who have a wealth of pharmaceutical knowledge (Dan, I'm looking in your direction ;))
So today at work, while vacuming, i come across a little unopened glass vial on the floor which i promptly pocket... only to discover when i got home that its something called Fentanyl. Now according to the 3 minutes of web research i just did, it's a pain reliever (exponentially stronger than morphine... about 50 times more potent apparently)... What i want to know is, has anyone ever had any experience with this drug? also, is it cookable like ketamine or is this something that has to be injected or administered through an IV? either way, this has to be *THE* most random thing to find at on the floor of a video rental store! |

Its an opiod analgesic. Its drug class is Opiot agonist, the best definiton for that that I could find was
"Compounds capable of relieving pain without the loss of CONSCIOUSNESS or without producing ANESTHESIA." The most likely result I found was for cancer patients with malignancies who are already recieving and tolerant to opiod therapy for their underlying persistent cancer pain. All of them also said that life threatening hypoventilation could occur at any dose in patirents not taking opiates. They also said, this product must not be used in opioid non-tolerant patients. And just to clarify what opiods not opiates are heres definitions of opiod. 1. Any synthetic narcotic not derived from opium. 2. Indicating substances such as enkephalins or endorphins occurring naturally in the body that act on the brain to decrease the sensation of pain. So, thats just what i could find, it doesnt look too safe though. |

Isn't this the synthetic stuff that is supposed to be like 30 times stronger than heroin ?
Jesus, I wouldn't try popping this cause if your dosage is off you might not wake up... |

Fentanyl is a really strong synthetic opiate, so although dangerous that also makes it highly recreational. Basically what you have is ultra-pure Heroin which can and has killed many people chasing its pleasureable effects. It can be taken IV, smoked, snorted or absorbed through mucous such as in your mouth (but innefective if swallowed).
The LD50 is 3.1mg/kg - take your body weight in kg multipy by 3.1 and that is how many milligrams will give you a 50/50 chance of dieing. So if you weigh 50 kg and take 1.5 grams you have a 50% chance of making it or not on average. A safe dosage would be considerably less then this. The Russians eventually said they used a Fetanyl derivative in the theater, not Fentanyl and they may have been lieing. They were under a lot of pressure since it was speculated they used a chemical gas banned under international conventions. Traces of other chemicals then Fentanyl were found in the blood and urine of some German survivors that were later examined by a German doctor. |

It's hard to know what a "safe" dosage is if you don't know the original strength of the fentanyl. |

This is a properly labelled pharmaceutical vial which would indicate strength. If it wasn't directly on the label it wouldn't be hard to look up online. It's not like it's a flap from some guy on the street.
Of course we're talking about a very powerful drug here so you are correct in that one would have to be very careful in chosing a dose. It also depends on the method of administration such as IV, smoking or absorbed through mucous membranes. |

belated report:
took 50ug sublingually. effects came on maybe a half hour after. came on strong and fast and kind of scared me at first. definite narcotic effect coupled with a relaxing body buzz. would have been really easy to sleep had i wanted to. peak came rather quick and then it was a slow descent back to normal. repeated the same experiment the following day. same results except not as pronounced as the 1st time. oh yeah, it has a tendency to make you forget to breathe, like on mush. so youre constantly reminding yourself to take a breath. not surprising that in higher doses, respiratory failure can occur. |
